Nah man getting the wedding sorted first, then the buying of parts begins. I took at look at that snort performance mob. They're inlet manifold with liquid to air intercooling looks pretty amazing - plus the fact the piping from turbo to TB would be maybe 50cm at most? Hello decent response (well as decent as one can get from a boosted 4L 6cyl haha)

Track Dog Racing air splitter installed. Excuse the poor iPhone images yet again. Too lazy to use proper camera.

mmmmmm not bad, I am undecided.
I looked at them, but they look a little small, but any bigger would be very rice, so, have to see it on the road to make up my mind.
Are you happy with the look?
Maybe with the car lowered it would look good, but at standard SE height, might emphasize the height off the ground.

I'm a fan
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Aye I'm a fan as well. Cheers :D Just breaks up the red a bit.

MINX, you're pretty much on the money. Car needs to be lowered. All in good time. :)
When I first saw it I thought it was too big tbh. Sitting on the car it's perfect. Not too rice and just sticking out enough to be noticed.

I shall let you touch it next time we meet.

So I woke up this morning with nigh a plan. After watching a crappy movie I went down to the garage and popped the bonnet. An hour later there were bolts and clips all over the floor and they were scaring me! The more they grew the more I forgot where they went. Having lunch and going to Bunnings twice wasn't going to help my memory either.

I was expecting a bit more oil to be honest but was naturally glad to see only the above. The PCV valve is still working fine but I did see a film of oil in the hose. Tried to find an air/water (or oil) separator filter but had no luck. I just wanted to see how much over X amount of time and wasn't really planning on running one all the time. Maybe if I can figure out a maintenance friendly way to do it I might run filters. I think a go-kart style fuel filter might do the trick seeing as they're small and relatively cheap. I had about 5 of those things but sold all my kart stuff about a month ago. All depends on how restrictive they are to the air flow. Will need to test this.

On the other end I had a look at the return line from the stock oil separator. Sadly it was dripping with wet oil. All of this ends up in the intake but I'm not sure how much makes it all the way to the manifold. I suspect only a little bit. Even so, I think I will install a second oil catch can right at the end of the return line and just before the intake. I've spotted a gorgeous catch can and although it is very expensive for a bit of metal it makes my heart flutter. I wrote a little blog about it here:

http://chicaneculture.com/2010/02/27/ca ... atch-cans/

I'll be getting the black one with the stainless top.

Image

All went back together easier than it came apart. Tightened the accelerator cable a touch and started up without worries. There was a bit of black stuff out the exhaust (on a white wall mind you :( ) but I suspect it will settle after a good run.

Well it wouldn't go anywhere else.

Should have polished it

Picked up some NB seat rails from Daz over the weekend. Thanks mate. Now I have the stock seat ready to go back in in 5 minutes. It's actually in now. Bucket is so much better for driving if not getting in and out.

Stock NB seat with rails = 14.5kg
Sparco V seat with rails = 13kg

If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't mess about with the Sparco V. I'd seriously consider a proper fixed fiberglass seat on very light rails and just use the stocker for normal daily driving. I might in the future consider doing this and selling the Sparco. About the only bonus for the Sparco is that it can be used with stock rails and it's perceived as legal for road use.

42 Draft Designs Ultimate Oil Catch Can

Postby two40 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:09 pm

Oil catch can came in this past week and had a go at installing it today. Yesterday morning, with the can in hand, I set out to do the rounds of the local auto parts stores looking for a suitable hose. I suspected it would take me hours to find the correct size and the correct bends. I only had a mental picture of what I needed. As luck would have it, the first store had the exact hose I needed without even wasting a millimetre. It came from a Ford Fairlane heater system and cost $30.

Image

I cut the hose only after I mounted the can. As mentioned, I didn't waste a millimetre and it just had the right length.

Image

I wanted to mount it so that I didn't have to drill holes and as I suspected when ordering the can, it fit well in the empty space next to the air filter. The mounting point was supplied by the black extender mount for the cross brace on top of the strut tower. There are pre cut holes about half an inch wide so a wide washer was used to hold it in place. I used only one bolt and it's pretty secure.

Image

A couple of extra hose clamps were needed to finish off the job and it looks like factory at a glance. Ideally I would finish it off with a small rubber spacer between the can and the strut tower to straighten it but it's functional and looks fine as it is. The dip stick on the catch can is a bit of a hassle to pull out as it hits the cross brace but it does come out and really, it's not a thing you will check every day. The can is built in such a way as to allow you to turn the top part so you can line up your inlet and outlet hose attachments but after testing all sorts of angles this is the one that worked best for me. There is a drain plug capped off by an allen key scrub screw on the bottom and faces the same direction as the bottom hose attachment. It can be reached with ease and the oil will need to be funnelled into a container. It's pretty tight but there is enough room.

Image

This coming Thursday I'm going to an open track day and will report if the can is effective. I did notice oil in the hoses I took off so it has to help even in some small way.

Yeah the PCV line has a touch of oil in it. Not a great deal though, just a light film. Working on a solution that won't involve running hoses across the engine. I'll try using a go-kart fuel filter or some kind of a small air/water separator. It will most likely need to be replaced pretty frequently. I've seen some of the yanks that have done this and they all end up with too much gunk in their filters after a while.

Yeah I've got the part number stored on my phone for when I go past a Mazda dealer. Mine seems to be fine though. I had it out a couple of weeks ago and it's still functioning well. The trace amounts of oil that get past it will get past the 323 PCV as well. The line just needs to have a filter installed to avoid those trace amounts because anally retentive car owners like us won't stand for a drop of oil in there.

I've got the FM PCV valve for turbo cars and it still gunks up. I'd definitely like to filter it all out and it may help the crankcase pressure too. I have t do some research first but im thinking of blocking the intake manifold plug and directing both vents to the catch can then sending the output to the intake port in front of the turbo which will suck it out, so it remails legal. That way you dont need a pcv.

I did some reading on this a while ago, and my understanding of the PCV was that it uses vacuum from the intake manifold in high to medium vacuum conditions (eg idle and light throttle) to blow through the vapor build up in the crackcase. At low vacuum or positive boost conditions the PCV shuts down to prevent positive pressurisation of the crankcase.

By removing the PCV completely, you wont have any vacuum to assist the blow through process? Or is this still enough pressure for the vapor to evacuate via the catchcan and into the intake pipe?
