So I got sick of my RSR blaring in my face every time I hit the accelerator.

I had this floating around my head for quite some time, no idea if it will work well or not but the standard silencer is pretty weak and makes a buzzy sound so I decided to tweak it a little.
Underneath the sink in the laundry I found a bunch of old grimy steel wool scours. I picked a hold in the centre of them and pushed them onto the silencer as best I could. Was a pretty tight fit so I'm hoping this absorbs some more of the sound.

I'm yet to try it on the road but I'm assuming this will quieten the car considerably but I'm on the fence until I hear it in action
Though, I'm wondering if I should poke one more scour into the middle of it too. I don't think these really constrict the flow too much, but should be enough to stop be cracking the sound barrier.

May put a cork in the old gal's pie hole for a while.

Don't know how long the steel wool will last...... but hey you never know your luck.

Dip the wool in some sort of flammable substance and get epic flame shooting on over run!

Ok so trial and error.... Although the steel wool made it quieter, the car felt like it had way more back pressure with the rear clogged up and it sounded like a buzzy lawnmower.

REALLY not a good sound. So I had a few experiments. I took the silencer out again and I packed the middle tube with steel wool instead. That actually sounded worse! Though it was short lived as the muffler blew the steel wool out.
Next I wanted to see how the car would sound if I made a big heaping ball of steel wool and crammed it deep into the pipe. That sounded terrible as well.

In the end I just put the silencer back in on it's own. It took a bit of mucking around but I realised that it doesn't sound that bad if you have it in at the right angle. Although both are round and it should fit in snug, it seems there must be a couple of knocks or maybe the silencer and exhaust aren't perfect circles. I found that you need to play around with the silencer until you have it at just the right angle and it closes off all the tiny gaps.
This essentially stops the vibrating sound I used to get all the time with it in. Hopefully exhaust dust and so on will coat the little imperfections and create a better seal over time. that should make it sound better.

This would have been better if I had the original silencer for the RSR not an aftermarket one. I have two holes drilling in the exhaust for silencers! One near the tip and the original rsr one deeper in. If I can track down an RSR silencer for cheap, I'd be very happy!

josh, after looking at yours.... mine is the same silencer

just wait till that layer of carbon seals it up. ;)

I have a feeling that the silencer system was a afterthought of the part manufacturer for the RS*R Image

Enjoying your different efforts, at least it's not china spec, I had the entire tip fall of my muffler.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Hahaha, that sucks!!!! My first muffler was like that. The whole thing had to be rewelded so I ended up throwing it out and replacing.

Though I'm very tempted to sell off the RSR. I'm dying to get my hands on a Fujitsubo but I guess I don't have the money. I love the sound of the RSR at full blast but when you want a relaxing night drive home from Melbourne it just doesn't shut up XD
The silencer is finally working well now but even so, it has this irritating metallic noise in the rear with the silencer fitted.

I'm very tempted to head to T&C for a cheap axle back setup for now. I drove Gareths stock NA a while ago and just found it so liberating hammering down the road without drawing the worlds attention.

I don't think I'll sell the RSR for a while but I'm certainly tempted to replace it.

is there a trick to getting the silencer out? I have no idea the last person who owned my RS*R managed to put it in, let alone take it out.

If it doesn't come out easily i'd let some penetrating lube sit in it for a day or so then try again. You might need to make up a section of wire to hook into the silencer to help pull it out.

Don't be surprised if it takes a lot of force to get it out. The first time I pulled mine out it took AGES! Like what felt like an hour of pulling.

Do what Okibi said first and let it sit for a while. Come back with a set of pliers and grip onto the middle bit that looks like an exhaust tip (of the silencer) and pull on it. Try to wiggle it left to ride and right to left.

Note that there is a bolt that holds the silencer in. If you don't remove it, you will have ZERO luck getting the silencer to come out. But like I said, don't worry if it's difficult, that's normal.

If it's been in for a long time, it could be years of carbon deposits and grit cementing the silencer into an already tight fit. It's just a matter of moving it aroudn enough to break the seal and then give it a hard tug.

Be careful though!!!!!!!!! The last time mine was stuck, I was pulling on it really hard and nothing was happening. Suddenly it popped out and hit my thumb and split it open... There was lots of blood and a deep cut that took a good week to heal. So be warned, it may suddenly pop out unexpectedly when applying force!!!

awesome, thanks for the tip. appreciate the experiment you've tried to do with the steel wool.

i know at first when I put my muffler on I thought i'd go deaf leaving it on (even with the silencer). I've gotten used to it (or a bit more hearing impaired), but it'd be nice to delete some of the droning at lower RPMs!

Are you running with rsr midpipe? I ended up taking mine off and having resonated one custom made to quieten it down a notch. Worked well but it could be a lot quieter...

get a BIG glasspack hotdog around about lined up with the gearbox. But if you have stock headers, tiny stock cat and midpipe and a big tailpipe, your going to have a megaphoone effect no matter what you do.

I'm running full engine back 2.25" system:
*2.25" Apex'i 4-into-1 extractors
*2.25" magnaflow high flow steel cat (100 mesh I think)
*2.25" custom made midpipe with 15" long resonator
*2.25" RSR GT2 Exmag Cat back (removed straight through midpipe for custom made resonated one) with 3" tip

You got any pics of the glasspack resi or where I can get one for cheap?
