JDM style rims, what's on the market?

Postby Appleseed » Sun Jul 31, 2011 11:36 pm

Hi guys,

I'm currently looking out for some 15"s with minimal offset and dish.

Of the wheels that are able to fit an NA MX5 i'm currently aware of:

Enkei's classic series
SSR MK series
Work Equips
Sportmaxx + Axis OG

As i'm not familiar with a wide variety of wheels i'd like to know what else is on the market so i can have a full picture before making any firm decisions.

Thanks,
Appleseed.

Take a look here:

If there are any you like or want something similar or you have questions about post the photo here so forum members can try and help you out.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Check out Tirerack.com - they will give you a good list of wheels that will fit the MX5's and some brands that you will not find here either.

I just pickup a set of TRmotorsport C1 15 x7 12.8lbs, they are made in china, but from what I can find on US forums they seem to be decent value. I have not had them long, but I'm happy with them.

Have the quality of Rota wheels improved? I know they had a shocking reputation

Thanks for the information guys, definitely a lot of useful links for me to follow up.

I don't mind the look of Rota's

I did have a look at this site, if you look down further it starts to show SSR, Advan, Enkei and others with the same problems, so i'm not too fussed.

I tried googling but found limited results, can anyone show me any pictures with the Grid-V Rota on an mx5? (it's going on a black NA8)

Mr Moderator . You may be , by publishing this endorsing the "line" put forward or ( hopefully)asking for alternative views. So here is one.

I have used and so have many friends used Rota's with absolutely no issues. Products are sometimes maligned for all sorts of reasons, including other manufacturers " dummy'' posts.Products also improve as anyone who has dríven some of the cars from nations that 10 years ago would have been ridiculed and now are at a good standard.eg Hyundia, Kia,Skoda.Quality is set by the customer and is primarily about consistency ie. what you expect is what you get.

I would be really interested to hear of anyone who has had Rota's in Australia in the last few years who has had a wheel failure in normal circumstances, not the typical US photos showing wheels that have looked like they have been run into a curb at high speed.I have no interest in promoting ANY brand of wheel and if people on this forum have had issues with Rota's would be pleased to hear their issues so that i do not continue to recommend them.

I did however spend a lot of time and money in a rallying career that included importing tyres, wheels . seats and other gear in business that financed my motorsport habit and have since spent the last 27 years of my career in Quality Assurance and Risk Management which has highlighted my need for objective evidence in decision making.

If we don't know then perhaps we should remain silent!!!! If we have had first hand experience then lets share it.

For what it's worth, I have run Rota RB's for a few years now. I cut a corner a bit tight and smacked the right rear over a kerb really hard. That wheel now looks...... exactly like the other 3. No damage except for a black mark from the tyre, no vibration.

Easy to dislike Rota for copying the classics, but I can't fault the quality for the price.

Me too that's why I posed the question and chose a link with a mix of brands showing "failure". I don't consider a wheel shattering as the result of hitting something solid as manufacture defect, spokes twisting under brake heat and torque loads is a concern.

I have to agree with Peter, AFAIK nobody in this forum has had Rotas that have failed.
Everybody seems to be repeating Chinese whispers like they are fact. What is the Australian experience like? I don't hear the deafening complaints.

Now this is what I call JDM style. It even has 'Mazdaspeed' cast into the face.

You can pick up a set from me for $495 but I only have this set.

Wow, that's definitely a nice price Bootz.

I'm still looking out at what's on the market but thanks for the offer, to be honest i think i'm looking more for a zero offset or close to that figure anyway.

i'm still curious as to if anyone knows of any pictures of mx5's with Grid-V Rota's on them? no worries if nobody know's of any...
