deviants race car

Postby deviant » Fri Aug 05, 2011 8:17 pm

Thought I would chuck some pictures of my new race car up here.

I have been desperate to go racing for about as long as I can remember. I had a LE NA8 turbo that I was using for trackdays and sprint type events which were great fun but to me just not enough. A chap I know had been racing this car here for some years and had been giving me a lot of help with my last car when he out of the blue offered me his race car. A deal was done and here we are! I should be racing next season.

It is still in the colours the last owner raced it in. I am still trying to decide on my own colour scheme. The front bar is painted blue but all the rest is vinyl.

Brakes are Impreza STI Brembo's on Skyline GTR discs. This combination was chosen as it allows a 30mm thick disc that is readily available. Pads to suit the Brembos are available everywhere. The car used to run NA8 brakes with serious pads in them but it was eating a set of discs every couple of races. Rear brakes are stock.

Image

When I picked the car up it was running the stock master cylinder which lacked feel and was very snatchy. The last owner just got used to it but I decided to fit a Wilwood 1 inch master cylinder to try and improve the feel. There is also a bias adjuster in the car. I have not yet been on track to test the new master cylinder.

Image

The engine is making 245RWHP. It has a AVO turbo kit, oil cooler, intercooler, PWR radiator, Commodore coil packs, an exhaust that just sticks out the side of the car with no silencers and a few trick internal bits. It has done 300RWHP on the dyno but was wound back to look after the transmission.

Image

Image

No headlights on the car so the oil cooler and air filter sit in their place and are fed air through the holes where the indicators used to be.

Image

Image

Interior has a full cage and a few gauges...boost, oil + water temp and RPM with shift light. I also just fitted a Miataroadster short shifter with the long gear stick. I have not been on track to try it yet but it feels really good just trying it. The gearbox is a 6 speed 99-00 gearbox.

Can anyone identify the seat?! I want a new cover for it.

The car also has a LSD, tein coilovers and a fat anti-roll bar.

At Barbagallo long circuit it has done a 65.3 and was raced around the 66 mark...I have only dríven it once and was some way off that but (race driver excuse) it was my first time driving it and I was out to just get a feel for it and not push. I am heading out again on Monday 15th August to set up the brake balance and I would like to push in to the low 67 bracket.

Nice wheels. I can see why you sold your old one now. Hope to see it in action some day.

There are 2 other sets of rims with it. The set I like the most are a multi-spoke Sparco rim that weigh sod all, the tyres on those are dead R888's so I cant use those rims at the moment. I will replace those tyres with Dunlop slicks.

I am game to give AHG / RAC a crack in it but I dont know if it (meaning me  ) would be much cop. It needs a lap to really get things up to temperature. The rear main is weeping a touch to which makes the clutch slip, I need a lap to give it some abuse to burn off any oil on it. Once the clutch is hot it's fine but that warm up lap is crucial.

Dann can probably tell me how tricky the rear main is for a home / amateur mechanic?

Its an engine out job at home. Doable in an arvo on your own.

I just did every seal in the engine and box in a day on my own including a big writeup. That was on the floor of my shed using wheels as car stands lol.

Yeah im cheap 8)

Engine out job...Maybe I can live with it for a while

Really not doable just dropping the box? I am guessing that messing around with the gearbox is fiddly and time consuming so is just as quick to pull the lot out.

There are only 5, easily accessable, bolts holding the whole engine/box in. Compared to the... 10 I think, super hard ones holding the box to the engine. Not to mention you have to undo the hardest 3 of the 5 I first mentioned to get the box out.

Its under 2 hours all up on a racecar really.

Looks like I am going to be pulling the engine sooner rather than later.

I as at a test day yesterday and lost my engine :(

Was flat out in 6th when the RPM dropped off to 4000RPM, oil pressure dropped and a big cloud of horsepower came out of the exhaust. No bad noises or big end rattle and it has not thrown a leg out of bed. The sump is full of oil so that was not lost.

My theory at the moment is either oil pump failure or I suffered some sort of ignition drama that broke a ring / melted a piston that has picked up the bore.

I'm thinking the first check is to pull the fuel pump fuse and see if the engine turns over, if it is just creaking over I think that would suggest the melted piston. If it cranks at full speed I have a compression tester so I can test for a holed piston or broken ring.

Oh and yes I will check the obvious things first and make sure all its hoses are attached and everything is plugged in....the big cloud of smoke suggest to me that it is more serious than that though.

I call broken oil pump gear if thats stock, or melted piston, you say flat out in 6th, was it tuned using an EGT guage?

No idea as it was tuned with the last owner. The tuner handles most of the turbo cars racing in WA so I would hope it is right, the engine is also 5 races and 2 or 3 full tuning days old so I would have thought a tuning issue would show up earlier?

The oil pump is a factory one. The pistons are from a turbo engine and were bought brand new.

If it was an oil supply issue would there not have been a death rattle with it....I guess an engine can just seize without a rattle?

If the gears break they just stop. But your probably right. The reason I ask about a big pull in sixth is that thats super hard on the piston in terms of heat. Would explain the oil smoke too.

I guess youll find out soon.

Cheers Dann.

I guess that is motorsport...sh*t happens sometimes! Just an excuse to build something stronger....and then hope that 6 speed box holds together and the diff doesn't explode!!

Is there an after market oil pump out there?

A couple of short vids taken with Harrys lap timer pro on iphone. The speeds are all wrong on the display, need an external GPS of some sort.

This is only the second day I have spent with the car so I am still on a massive learning curve but I just made a couple of tweaks that have made it much more comfortable and drivable for me. I fitted a miataroadster.com 'tall' shift kit which cured the 6 speed box dodgy feel and the big Wilwood master cylinder has given the brake pedal a wonderful feel. I also knocked up a tab for the throttle pedal to make heel and toe easier.

I am still about 2 seconds off the best times set by the last owner of this car. My race driver excuses are that the R888's are still to new, the car is massively under tyred on 205 width tyres and the other guy has 30 years and something like 40,000 laps of Barbagallo under his belt.

The tyre thing might not be far off the truth, it has 205s for one class but can run 220 slicks for another....I'll keep telling myself that though.

Had a spin on this lap, seems there is a fine line between getting the line right or wrong for that corner

Standard oversized rings, standard bearings, standard headgasket, some arp head studs and theres your well over 400rwhp bottom end.

Your welcome.

LOL.

The total prices there is under 1500 dollars for parts. And thats a serious bottom end. As used by Sav and the like.
