Re: Wheel Size
Let me put a different slant on this.
I had a set of Roh wheels on my car nearly 20 years ago...brand spanking new Civic VTi that I drove into a kerb...on my birthday too. Yarra Boulevard in Kew.
The wheels came out with a bad case of gutter rash. The front left suspension didn't fair so well - bent arms, busted CV joint, etc etc.
My point is, I'd rather the wheel broke. Instead, it was strong enough to survive and transferred all of that energy into the suspension. $5000 worth of damage / repair in 1995 dollars...instead of a busted wheel.

See if I were a betting man I'd say that you too fell into that category drkkos?
Yes there are photos of busted Rota's around the interwebs, but I'll guarantee you that you can find pictures of bbs/work/watatnabe wheels in a similar state.
No I haven't, but to be honest I would buy rota rims or even others like OG, Stance, XXR, I was just stating why people hate on rota and other brand rims.
If your going to hit a pot hole or slap it into a gutter hard enough, a rim will crack/shatter/buckle.
Alot of people will be hate on fake rims in general just because they want the legit wheel.

Re: Wheel Size
This is all very interesting, The the thought of a fragile set of rims makes you feel uneasy. On the other hand Apu's experience really does put a different slant on it.
So the Rota RB's are a copy but a copy of what? Panasport?

Re: Wheel Size
Depends who you talk to. There's that many iterations of similarly spoked wheels around that I really wouldn't worry about it. Watanabe's are often quoted as the inspiration, but Panasport's were around before that, and Minilite before that.

Trying to source some wheels in australia but the prices are astounding. Anyone know of a reliable overseas vendor for wheels?

Re: Wheel Size
What wheels are you looking for? I've got a set coming in a couple of weeks which cost me peanuts, about 6kg for a 15".
I've learnt from my previous experiences. I'm not racing so I'm not overly concerned about superlight wheels - the heartache if I rash them, threat of theft, etc etc. OZ Superleggeras - light, but prone to ovalising apparently (a few friends had them and it was an apparently common problem).
The price I got the wheels at (excluding shipping) will cost marginally more to replace than repair. They are SSR Type C lookalikes, not branded but made by the factory that makes other mid-range wheels.
...and if I put the car into a kerb, hopefully it will be the tyre and wheel that goes rather than the suspension!

Re: Wheel Size
At this stage either the Rota RB's (heavy but pretty) or Enkei RPF1's (light but more expensive)
Something in that style anyway

It's often worth checking what Rupewrecht's got in stock too. Page 1 of the "Latest Container" thread.

Re: Wheel Size
Really? They are probably one of those most commonly fitted aftermarket wheels to an mx5
Haven't bought a set of alloys since the 80's so I have no idea of what any of them are now.

Those 6UL's don't do much for me, What I want is in the style of the Rota RB's. Seems like there is very little choice locally.
Tempted to just get these at $660 delivered.

Re: Wheel Size
Look into Compomotive ML's. They look better than the RB's and should be about the same price.

Josh, you are right they probably should be but when I got a quote a while back they were like Rota's price by a factor of 1.75!
