the ultimate mx5 engine????

Postby mhj » Tue Sep 13, 2011 10:23 am

im just sitting here in the sun, waiting for a client to arrive, musing, perhaps absurdly , on what the ultimate mx5 engine would be?
i like the idea of a large supercharger on a stroked engine with lots of head work etc
but then the rotary options seem like a good thing.... love the bullet 4 litre v8. add a supercharger. terrifying :) ....also saw an early bulllet currently for sale with a ford 4.5 lt v8..... of course the ls2 chev engine if only it could be legalized!!!
So just for fun i wonder.....whats the ultimate mx5 engine you can imagine ...feel free to make only the barest reference to practicality:)
enjoy

Bare references to practicality? Sure thing :). Maybe if we removed most/all of the front bodywork and completely redesigned everything else so that it would sit right and be able to transmit drive to the back wheels I would like to own something with one of these in it:

Honestly its a 20B, aspirated, with a little porting. Its the only thing that will just slot right in, not affect handling, makes huge power, with the type of powerband that is fun to drive, and is easy to work on.

And its a mazda.

the ultimate engine would be the 13b turbo I have in my mx5 :) 7.69 second quarter mile on its 3rd pass, fits in the stock engine bay pretty easily...

20b is heavy due to the external components that arent needed in a naturally aspirated mx5 swap. Things like the turbos and headers etc etc.

V8 built from Hyabussa engines like they use in Radical - but light and compacts. 5,000 rpm or something equally silly and 1,000+ hp with a turbo.

Anyone who heard the normally aspirated V8 Radical running at one of the state supersprints would know what I mean.

haha I sure did ;)

I'd be happy with a small 400hp engine that revs to 10k

effectively the ultimate engine for a mx5 is going to be something with high hp and relatively low torque with a nice linear power band.

26B sounds pretty good to me!!!
