Why the long wait for new wheels?

Postby Mr nanotech » Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:56 pm

When ordering brand new wheels from a company such as Watanabe, Volk, SSR, BBS etc etc etc... Why is the wait so long after placing the order?
On average I hear it takes around 6 months but often can take nearly a year for them to arrive.

Why does it take so long? The only thing I can think of is that there is a waiting list, but even so. 6-12 months? Really? That seems VERY excessive...

They are made from scratch.

2000 dollars for wheels from people being paid 6 bucks an hour thats what...300 hours work to make some nice custom wheels.
And then the huge waiting lists.

And then they intentionally take long to keep supply low and demand high.

Nothing yet but was aiming to save a little more and buy some watanabe's new but I've read that they can take up to a year or longer... That's seriously put me off.

Personally I think you would be mad to buy the big brand OMG JDM rims. farking expensive, long wait, WTF do you do if there is an error and honestly there are some really good rims out there much cheaper and pretty much available off the shelf. It is all about the name label.

You would probably have a shorter wait and a smaller bill finding used ones and getting them refurbished?

Keep an eye on yahoo, through import monster or rupe. Always watanabe rims for sale. Just be careful on pcd, most are 114.

What size you looking for? There was. A set of mg ones hanging around recently but were 14 by 6 I think.

Bit surprised buy a year wait time. Ottomoto didn't mention that when I got a quote, I couldn't justify 700 a rim for 8" that may or may not fit when I could get a set of 7", with tires for 1500 locally (yes genuine wantanabes).

IF you just want the look the rotas and xxr are available local much cheaper

Not all rims are in stock. So they wait until the have a few orders before the make a batch up.

Much cheaper for them to do a batches of 50-100 than to do just four when one person makes an order.

I waited two months for my cam gears from Japan to be manufactured. I was lucky.

True, even raw materials would need to wait until a bulk lot can be bought.

I doubt Alcoa (or whoever they use for aluminium in Japan) would even bother to ship out an order for only 25kg of alloy.

Just get rotas if you want that look, only 840 for a set and no wait, people would be saying nice rotas at watanabes anyway

Haha depends on who's looking. some can tell, some assume wantanabes. I haven't seen weights on the rotas either, wantanabes might be lighter
