After giving the car a drive before and after applying the engine cleaner, it has made a difference. Nothing grand or exciting but it does feel like the engine has a little less struggle under load and revs a tiny bit free-er now.
That said, I have to fix this lifter noise, the car is sounding shocking. It used to do this only on start up but now it's constant. Doesn't matter how long you run the car, STILL hear 'tappatappatappatappa' and I'm getting absolutely sick of it.

Any suggestions? I don't have the money for anything major like replacing lifters etc sadly. Will be taking it to my brother to look at in the next week or two I think.

If I had've read this in time I would have told you that the Subaru upper engine cleaner trick isnt as effective as the ATF trick, after cycling the ATF through the engine try the Nulon treatment.
IF...and I say IF you need lifters, check the parts prices on Kia Shuma/ Spectra/ Mentor (or whatever else it was called) lifters, the same engine parts for them as well (they used Mazda engines) should be cheaper, well in theory anyway.

The other thing...when was the last time you did an oil change? ALSO...how much oil is in it now? Those 2 things also count as well.

Ok so I probably should have mentioned this earlier lol. Oil is clean and full. Which is why I found this really odd. Two really stupid questions though. What are ATF and Nulon?

ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Nulon = a brand of car stuff (oils etc), one of the products they make is called "Lifter Free"

Sorry Josh, thanks Nick. ATF has a high detergent content and I have found it very usefull in clearing the gunk out of several motorcycle engines and as a matter of course I used it in my NB before I started the new service regime.

With your engine oil, run 1L of ATF for 100Km's, or 100ml of diesel at idle for 15 mins then drop the oil.

PLUS 1 for the ATF ratio and drive quietly.

What is your oil viscosity? I get more lifter noise with 5W30 than I did with 15W50.

Have you tried this stuff? It works.

Haven't taken it for a run and didn't feel like battling it out with school/work traffic haha. I'll take it for a spin later and see how it idles/starts.

Edit

Curiosity got the better of me so I started it up in the driveway just now. Sounds like crap still, no difference.

Every treatment, flush and oilchange you do to try to help it just makes it harder to afford a set of lifters. Lifters should cost around 300 for a full set of brand new ones.

But what if the lifters aren't Fucked and they're just gummed up etc. Is it possible to get lifters from another car using the b6 for cheaper? Like a laser or something

Of course, just shop around.

If they are gummed up you can remove them, dissassemble them, soak them in something for a few days, then refit them and hope they arent rooted like I bet they are at their age. Or just buy new ones.

There was another lifter thread today that listed some kia models with the same engine

There are like 1000 lifter threads across the net. Either fit a cannon, earplugs, or new lifters.
