Re: Weevils 94 MX5 Clubman track hack

Postby evil_weevil » Wed Nov 02, 2011 12:22 pm

So just did my last race meet for the year.

Managed 3rd in race 1 with MX5 race -

Also raced in superTT and with a field of 27 or so cars - qualifying was a sh*t fight and managed a 1.15.3 put me 15th or so on the grid.
lost lost of positions due to lack of straight line grunt but had some mad battles within my pack against an HQ Monaro, few pug's, other MX5's etc
Straight after that race I had to go to dummy grid for MX5 race 2.
Race 2 MX3 started 3rd on the grid and again got swallowed by more powerful cars
managed a PB in this 8 lapper race with a 1.13.6
I felt very crook after those 2 races and couldnt stand up, needed a feed and water = felt good.
Race 2 superTT up again and had some awesome battles.
nothing spectacular in there to report on
Race 3 MX5 was up and all set to go on dummy grid and a the race before from future racers - one of them has an oil down which covered 90% of the track.
it was extremely slippery and I did 4 laps and gave up. my first DNF but there was no point sliding around having off's and breaking something.

So now I have promised myself before MRA round 1 2012 Im fitting cams and ECU.
similar guys I race with who have that are doing 1.11-1.12
i'll be happy with that

2012 wont have much racing as wife and I have a lil bubby on the way!!
I'll do what I can!

Good stuff Chris 8) . Work on turns 2 & 5 and there's a mid 1:12 in your near future. :D

My method in turn 5 is to start up at the top of the track after turn 4, have a throttle lift (no brakes), turn in and let the rear step out to get the nose pointed in, counter-steer then plant the throttle and slide across the apex (avoid clipping the inside ripple strip) all the way to the ripple strip on the outside. Get it right and it's worth a few tenths. Check out my YouTube videos for examples. It works for me with an open diff - you might need to modify it with an LSD. Has taken me LOTS of practice to get it right and I still have plenty of fail moments.

Cheers Bryan,

I'll have a squiz when I get home - see how you do it and try and use that way and give it a go, I think I am turning a bit too early on 5

Good one, Chris, and I can't believe how lazy you are with the revs to get those times. You're going from 3rd to 4th hundreds of meters before mine does. You haven't got a V8 in that, have you?

Neither good nor bad, but you might be leaving a bit of top speed on the table on the back straight and main straight if you don't rev it out much. There's more acceleration in high 3rd than in low 4th.

Are you on slicks?

nah, r888's.

I think its just the sound of the car - it doesnt sound like its revving high - I remember someone said that with my Oran Park in car vid.

its red line in all gears - must jsut be the sound- mania intake + exhaust + camera quality

More than the sound. I can see the gear changes. By way of comparison at Wakie I never reach 4th in the back straight. On the front straight I change 2nd to 3rd just before the wall starts and 3rd to 4th 20m before the checkered flag.

Original 4.1 diff ratio?

My method also. Lift off as the track drops. The rear starts to slide as it unweights and just nail the throttle.
I tried Mark's late turn on T5 last meeting and I won't do that again, especially with the lift and slide method. The brake dab method might work but you need to be very quick to catch the rear using that line.

I don't know how good your brakes are but my braking points are way deeper into T10 and T2.
T2 you're backing off at the apex, keep the power down and then stand an the brakes just before the car starts going straight, trail brake and then feed the power in to get the weight back over the rear wheels for the exit.
T10 power to 90 metres then by the time you're on the picks it's 80 metres out, again trail brake then feed in the power.
There you go another second off your best. :D

Manga - AFAIK it has the stock ratio...which is...? (i have no idea haha)

Charlie - thanks for the tips mate!
brakes are goodish - RDA slotted, QFM pads, braided lines and dot 5 fluid.
braking has never been my strong point. One mate pointed out I should keep braking later and harder then go 4th to 2nd for T10 instead of concentrating on down shifting and braking at same time - 4th - 3rd - 2nd
T2 I always hate as you can tell with the last 5 seconds of the vid - I dont think I have ever got it right!
or do you mean turn 1? I noticed I backed off there too..hehe

thanks for the advice - will be Jan 2012 my next go at it :)
