Just got them in yesterday, installation went pretty smoothly. Had a bit of trouble squeezing the old front ones out without taking off the wishbone ball joints, but putting the new ones in were much easier (ysr unit shorter than stock)

I had 330mm from guard to center of hub all round to begin with, after using the recommended installation settings it dropped to 320mm and will probably go down a bit more after it settles down.

I set off on my 1st test drive with the shocks on the lowest setting, 0. The first thing I noticed was how much more comfortable the ride was with the new shocks, before my suspension would crash a bit over rough roads but the new shocks soaked up the bumps noticeably better. But the softest setting had too much roll for my liking, and noticeably more than with the stock shocks. I've got 130k kms on the NB, I'm guessing the old shocks were the original and never been replaced.

Then I went up to 8 clicks all round, the recommended street driving setting. The shocks firmed up noticeably and steering response was alot better. The ride firmed up a bit but still pretty comfy.

I'll let them settle a bit over a couple of weeks before I readjust the height or shocks, but overall super happy with what I got. One thing I will say is the rear end feels proportionally more twitchy to the front than stock. I think stock spring rates are 3/2 but the ysr's are 8/6, so the fronts are 2 and 2/3 times stiffer but the rears are 3 times stiffer. In the crazy downpour we got in sydney last night it was noticeably alot easier getting the arse out around corners (I suppose a used set of coilovers and bunch of tools in the boot didnt help). Just gotta take it easy in the rain i suppose. First mod I've done to my car, glad it went well and i got results 8)

Did you get an alignment done? If not you'll need one.

Yeah, I'll go get a wheel alignment as well. From driving it yesterday it feels like the rear is toed in if that's even possible from lowering it. Rears have a bit more camber too.

Anyone out there got any suggestions (preferably tried and tested) on a good wheel alignment setup for NBs in terms of camber/toe/castor? Cheers

I have done about 600km on my Dynamic Pro Sports and I am very happy. They are firm but compliant and the performance is fantastic. The KYBs & S techs they replaced were shot so perhaps the change for me is more dramatic. I have upped the damping for the third time, after reading this thread again, to front 20 & rear 16 and agree that it gets better with more damping. I was initially concerned that 8kg & 6kg springs would be too harsh and moved away a little from a 3/2 spring ratio but I should not have worried there is obviously a reason manufacturers use 8/6kg and it suits me.

I have noticed some wheezing over speed humps etc, I'm hoping its just the dust boots. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I talk to Mania about it?

Cheers

I'm in Artarmon Sydney, I know a couple of places around me. Just not sure on the range of alignment specs that'd run good on an NB

Is your car black? I'm in Artarmon too and have seen a black NB parked nearby several times in the last couple of months, just up from the station.

Best place for an alignment in Sydney for an MX5 is Spinning Wheels in Waterloo.

Another update - now been running the Sport yellows for 5000km on my NA and the verdict is they're great.

Best overall settings I've found are 24 front, 20 rear, plus raise the rear perch height ~10mm to give more rear compressive travel (i.e. run a little pre-load to lift the shocks off the bumpstops). This helps a lot on the rougher roads and concrete sections of road like Parramatta rd.

I couldn't imagine people are having trouble getting them low enough!!! I am miles above minimum height adjustment at front and rear, and am still borderline getting over speed humps.

It is possible, for instance, that when YSR say 8/6 there might be some rounding involved and it's more of a 8.3/5.5 ratio (measuring in whole kg is a bit odd really).

Anyway, I'd just like to hear about the balance of the car from these YSR owners with NA or NB and the '8kg/6kg' springs when used on a track/hill climb.

I can honestly say your alignment plays a far greater role in balance than subtle differences in spring rate ratios. I currently run max rear camber that stock suspension allows, and -0.5' front, with full forward caster @ front. Standard sways, and yellowspeed Sports.

With this in mind, I get very neutral handling at speed, with a slight tendency to understeer (this is the opposite effect to the increased rear spring ratio suggested in the linked thread) at lower speed corners (i.e. 1st gear before you hit the power), or in rough/choppy turns. In all turns the car balances well using throttle and brake/trailing throttle, so I wouldn't change my camber settings at all.

I suspect that swaybars will play more of a role in balance than the spring rates do, since you're limiting the grip of the inside wheels more when running stiffer sways, but on standard sways, it is VERY well balanced.

Just my 2c as an owner of the yellows after owning them a while.

Hey all. Well you can add me to the YSR owners club :) I just fitted a 2nd hand set of Dynamic Pro Sports to my NA8.

The previous owner had fitted them to his Girl Friends MX-5....she was not happy. Too hard for her I guess.

I found that I had to raise the rear spring perch height to provide more bumpstop clearance for road use. In the short distance/time I've had them I am quite happy. Very similar ride/feel to the Tein Flex that I had on my previous NA6 (Tweety).

Hi all
Is fitment of these coilovers on a NB8A a straight forward process? Ive read about the long bolt method, but i cant find a good guide on the web anywhere.

This is the "Long-bolt" method which I used. Unfortunately there is no picture of this long bolt in Step 8 of the site above but it's obvious since its under the from wheel arch at the top.

Regarding this step:

8. Remove the upper control arm bolt. This is a really long bolt that connects your upper control arm to the frame. You will need a 21 mm socket and a 21 mm wrench to complete this task. Once you have the nut off, you can push the LONG bolt out of the upper control arm and frame. If the LONG bolt appears to be stuck and does not want to come out, refer back to step 6. Many times, the sway bar bolts just need to be backed out a little farther

You slide the long bolt foward (to front of the car). On the passenger side, my long bolt was stuck fast and I ended up using steel rod inserts and a rubber hammer to knock it through. The driver's side slid out easily. I should have referred to the comment in "Step 6".

There you go.
