Sorry if this is a long winded post but I didn't want you to get the wrong impression from my post.
I got no problem with you guys catching up with each other etc. I just needed to make sure i've jammed my disclaimer in there as it only takes one idiot showing up and giving us all a bad rep.
A few years ago now both Matty and I were fairly young MX-5 club presidents, my experience is that MX-5 clubs WANT younger members to contribute but you might find the younger members tend to only attend motorsport or special events. I hope the club committees would value your input.
There's 2 ways to stop feeling out of place, 1) get to know the people there, chances are most are young at heart and have years of car knowledge to share and 2) encourage more younger drivers to attend events.
We have foundation members in our club who have a wealth of motorsport experience and I feel their comments and tuition is worth our club membership price alone, if I had dismissed them because they were older than myself i'd really be missing out. You can learn more from listening than talking.
Perhaps you guys could organise your cruise to show up at the club event to meet a few people then go off and do your own thing if you feel out of place, it would be good for the club to see enthusiasts who are keen to drive their MX-5s but don't want the tea and scones stigma.
I'd hate to think any MX-5 club was snobby towards older cars or imported NAs etc. that kind of feedback really upsets me. I do worry the clubs started with members who could afford brand new cars and some may want to keep their richer clique but lets face it, they're not Porsches so the chip on their shoulder is misplaced.
Last time I was the president of the MX5 Club of Western Australia I had the cheapest, most beaten up Eunos in the club, no one seemed to care.
I can see where you're coming from, I quit the Triumph car club of W.A. because it seemed that most of them spent their retirement polishing their cars rather than driving them and spent more time criticising cars that were non concourse rather than simple encouraging members to enjoy their cars. Perhaps my experience is why i'm opinionated about making sure the MX-5 clubs don't end up the same way.
It doesn't help encourage younger members when photos from Natmeet show people in fancy dress looking like a bingo bus tour, the clubs need to look at how they present themselves (WA club included) and look to the future. I feel they have a responsibility to encourage younger members and help provide them with driver training and access to motorsport venues.
Rather than create an us and them attitude you need to get involved in the club events that suit you and where possible organise club events that you feel enthusiasts like yourself would attend.
The clubs aren't going to be everything to everyone one, although i'm a life member of the MX5 Club of W.A. I also get involved in AFARCC and other car clubs.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
