Koni sports kit ?

I’m looking at buying the Koni Sports Kit for my NA6 but am unsure of the ride heights I can set and can't seem to find any info on this specifically anyone had a set of these that can post ?

Are they any good ?

I have Koni Sport dampers and king springs. I am sure there are better dampers out there, but they are decent and serve me well at the track.

With regards to ride heights, I have mine on the lowest settings, there are various pictures on my garage thread - http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=40374

Also check out the top mounts on the rear, if you don't do something like on my thread, you will be riding pretty much on the bump stops when on the lowest settings. It is not very nice going over bumps and your handling will be pretty bad.

I cannot comment on the other settings available unfortunately

Thanks for the reply, I'm thinkin that this might not be one of my brightest ideas , I don't want a drop over 25mm in fact 20mm would be best and I'm strugling to find anything other than coilovers that will do it.

I've had a recomend of KYB and Eibach but same issue, 30mm drop, I'll just keep lookink I guess.

King Springs make a standard height spring, like the ones I sold a few months ago. With those springs on the OEM height perches, you should be fine

My friend actually has a Koni Coilover kit out of a NA8 for sale

The coilovers off the top of my head is in good condition and would be selling for a reasonable price

Hey Basho,

Before the likes of Tein, Yellow Speed racing, and similar low to mid-price coilovers were available the Koni sports dampers were very popular. I had a set on my first NA6 (Stacey). I used them with a set of short King springs. There were a number of people that use the Koni dampers in conjunction with the Mazda OEM springs. From what I am told this was quite a good combination. Better damping, and adjustable....and don't forget that the spring perch height on the Koni sports dampers (NA only, not NB) is adjustable, so you can lower the car or raise it if you desire.

The only real flaw I noticed with the Konis is that in order to install them you need to drill out the tophats to make the piston rod fit through.

It's not a huge deal, but it's annoying when they don't just bolt straight in.

The koni's have a stroke of 125mm front and rear, and 3 adjustment points for the spring perch, approximately 15mm spaced i think. So you would able to lower the car to the desired about my using standard length springs I think. By using stiffer springs (such as king's), you'll maintain more "height" as the stiffer spring will compress less under the weight of the car.

I think you'll be able to drop the car by ~20mm easy enough with the koni's.

also, i would recommend the stock suspension over yellowspeeds.....

Yup I did, SS' s a couple of months ago and yesterday I took them out :lol:

I'm an extraordinarily fussy ole plik and I couldn't get trhe things set just how I wanted, threw a hissy, decided a few of days ago to have a look around at alternatives -

-and run on OEM leaving me free to flog the Teins with the proceeds going towards my next try

I kept thinking one day my temper will get the better of me until I worked out that at 64 I'll be dead before it gets chance.

Thanks for the replies all , they've given me a much better idea of what I'm looking at , the idea of using OE springs with the Konis appeals enormously , danmed top adjuster and spare wheel are a pita though, I've altready modded the tank filler guard to allow access on the other side because of the Teins.

Going from teins to koni's might not solve the problem.

Maybe hit up fat cat motorsport? Reasonable price for custom built coil overs.

Or get ohlins. They're amazing. So amazing, my girlfriends want's a set in her car. If you're in brisbane at some point, hit me up and I'll take you for a ride in my car if i am free.

Konis on the unforgiving side ?

Ohlins would be lovely but at $3K + shipping a set I'm sorry to say not on my menu , even a couple of grand from Fat Cat is a stretch , just not in my budget realy.

I'm sure they're value but I have to keep in mind the cost of the mod related to the value of the car (92 NA6 with 85K on it) and the fact that I won't be tracking it so it's hard to justify a big cost.

Basho, if you've not already, have a look at what tbro of North Brisbane did with his NA suspension, which ultimately lead to the following comment by Novice1:

I get the teins mixed up - i thought the ss were the mono flex's - which are suppose to be pretty good.

I found my koni's were alright fairly comfortable when i had softer springs on them - When i put slightly stiff springs on them, the ride got a little harsh on low rebound settings.

And i'm pretty tbro's suspension has custom valving
