I thought I would be out at all the track days this year to keep my hand in and chase the 1600 mod trophy, but alas work has gotten in the way.

I have gone from a gentleman of leisure to picking up a nice contract that will see me miss about half the track days, and I just got new suspension and sticky tyres for the track. Hopefully the days I can make I will be quick enough to get towards the top of the point score.

Sorry Roger- I only just caught on to this post- Me thinks reading betwixt the lines that you and my best mate Chris might be on the same path?
He's on for a April/May delivery, there might be a bit of crossover for the track days this year? Sounds like great fun to me!
Merry Christmas all! - might have to ease up on the bevvies soon or I won't fit into my own seat soon! ;-)

I think we're on the same wavelength!! Just spoke with my Dealer and the 86 came off the line Boxing Day and is currently being shipped to Yokohama for loading!! WILL be plated 'Dec build/January compliance'

Yea, my NB is flying alright!! Came home from Wagga Wagga yesterday, 1400km in just over 15 hours and hit a bump north of Moree that launched me airborn!! Couldn't miss it but all OK although someone had lost a jockey wheel and hit that and lucky it didnt spear a tyre!! Never went over %%%%%%% except when I passed a B-Double + car/caravan + another car in the Pillaga Scrub between Coonabarabran and Narrabri, just 6000rpm in 3rd and did the job fast!!

OK, now just over 3 weeks to 'blast off' at Lakeside, so looking forward to it!! How about a few post if they are going so we have an idea of numbers

Can someone fill me in on the details?

I've dome some track days on the Nurburg Ring a few years ago with an old Beamer and I just got the :NB8B: . No race setup, no harness, nothing. Just a rollbar with a certificate.

Would it make sense to drive a few rounds to get into it or is this event for real racers?

No, it's not 'door-to-door' racing, it's a sprint event, cars are grouped according to lap times, fastest in Group 1 - there are rules, like no overtaking in corners [due to the fact most cars are the drivers 'daily drives']

The idea is it's all about YOUR lap time and trying to better it. Group are usually around 10-12 cars, each run consists of a lead-out /warm up lap, then 5 flying laps and then a slow down and back to the pits [covered]

Generally, an afternoons action and for groups would see 5-6 runs for each group, there being no 'incidents' and we have managed to fit SEVEN runs it for a day

No scrutineering, roll bars are not mandatory, the event is run under AASA and not CAMS. 'Real Racers' are welcome as are 'other makes' apart from MX5's

Beginers are always welcome and Club members are available to lend assistance, and a few 'sighting' laps with an experienced driver is made available before the event starts, that gives a newcomer an idea of the track layout

If it's your first time in the NB8B no drama!! Plenty of NB's will be there, mine is an NB8A with rollbar, suspension, swaybars, wheels and tyres but running a standard engine - still a load of fun!!

Feel free to ask any questions you may think of and make a post here, someone will answer you for sure!!

You need a full face helmet, long sleeved top, long pants (or a race suit/overalls) and closed in shoes. A standard car in road worthy condition is all you need in the car department. A routine service in the 6 months prior to the event should be all it would need but check all is operating well in the oil, cooling, tyre and braking departments. A fire extinguisher is not mandatory. My car is standard apart from aftermarket sway bars and a fire extinguisher.

Thanks for the info. Just got my helmet out of the moving box and tried to sit in the 5er with it. Not a lot of headroom but it works just :D

My helmet is from bellracing, it's 4 years old, doesn't have a visor but it fits German standards for track days, are there any restrictions on helmets here like Australian certifications the helmet needs?

Don't own a racing overall but I guess that's not a problem.

Is a fire extinguisher required or recommended?

Where can I find details on cost and how to sign up for the event?

Sorry, many questions but it would be great to be able to join.

Just got to find the driftbox somewhere....

Is it a Snell sticker?
Otherwise it will need to meet and have an Australian Standards sticker:

Simply recommended, not required for MX5 Club Sprint Days

Great, thanks. I'm not a club member yet but sent an email to sign up. Once that's done I'll sign up for the event.

The helmet's got a snell sticker from 2005. Didn't know I had it for that long

As for the fire extinguisher: What's a good place to buy one and where's the best place to put it?

Still searching for the driftbox....

Your helmet will need a visor (or will have to wear goggles) if you plan to do any CAMS events with the top down.

You can get a 1kg dry powder fire extinguisher from any car accessory shop or Bunnings etc. Make sure it was manufactured no more than 6 months prior to when you buy it and that it meets AS 1841.5.

You can make a mount to go in front of either seat. There are some for sale here or make your own.
