I think of Van Halen's "5150" album when I see "Maniac" - "5150" is the US police code for "Maniac on the loose" (that's a real blast from the past).
"Sticker Theory" indicates that they'll be worth an additional 5 killer-wasps at least

"The VTCS (Variable Tumble Control System) is a flap in the intake, it causes the air to tumble into the intake ports instead of flowing in a laminar fashion. This reduces power in the top end, but in the low end it increases the fuel-air mixing. When I was tuning on an SE, I found it wanted to be on below 3000 RPM and below 80 kPa MAP. At full throttle it didn't want to be on, but at part throttle, I could use less fuel to get to stoich."
MAZDA spent a lot of effort getting this right so it wasn't a bad idea by Lassi at mazda-speed.com to let the factory ECU handle it, especially when it seems to cause a lot of issues with aftermarket ECU tuning and the factory ECU already does this well.

I have found it helps with transient throttle tuning.
If you have the E420D (Select) then ignore this post.
