Re: Club Track Day 5th of May SMP South
Thanks Bryan, I expect to be at the next meeting. The later iteration where speed and track position are shown is particularly useful. I can reference off our own performance box when next I use it - temporarily retired at the moment. I notice you are coming out of the turn onto pit straight faster than me so I'm losing time there for starters.

Re: Club Track Day 5th of May SMP South
Not only was it a day full of MX-5s on the South circuit, at the CSCA supersprint next door on the North circuit, 11 of the 105 drivers were in MX-5s! Seems that many at MG Car Club Newcastle are landing MX-5s for their track days.
Neil ... I've added the data overlay to the video from my 4th run and will try uploading to YouTube tonight (it's 225MB!). That run had a bit of everything: 1:09.64 with a slide at the end, 1:10.42 due to the slow start, 1:09.69, 1:12.98 with a slight departure at turn 6, 1:09.39 chasing Allan Rewell's turbo NA, 1:10.22 a bit messy. Would have liked to show Run 5 but the GoPro was playing up for that run: 1:10.34, 1:09.47, 1:09.82, 1:09.42, 1:09.58.

I have also put a couple of videos up on youtube from last Sunday 5th May at the club track day, and would welcome comments about the video or my driving, good or bad :-)
No overlays or other enhancements, just the video from a GoPro Hero2 mounted on the rollcage.
Last few laps of run 4

Blesif as you are probably aware - what driving style works for one may not work for another, it is dependent on car/setup/driver's personal approach.
Guran has a style which suits his car, and has the skill to pull it off - it is not going to work for everybody.

Thanks for those. Great pics. You get good perspectives from the pits area at SMP, don't you?barge wrote:My photos from the day are available on Flickr here.
They are pretty basic, no processing done.

Nice and clean lines there David - very smooth and controlled. My main suggestion would be to use 2nd gear for turn 12 (uphill righthand hairpin). It's about 60-65km/hr in my car and would be right in the "meat" of 2nd gear for you. Taking it in 3rd is dropping the revs too low and compromising your exit speed. You'll need to pull 3rd gear as you're exiting the turn, but it should give you a headstart onto the long run to turn 15a. I suspect you'd pick up at least half a second there.

Good shots.
I see you picked up one of my two spins in the same corner when I selected 1st gear instead of 3rd.

I have in-car video of the spin and it's amazing how quick it rotated. By the way my lap time for the two spin laps were 1:12.20 and 1:12.12, so I showed improvement in the restarting technique.

Yes, using 3rd in turn 12 did see the revs drop to near 4000, at about 69ish km/h, which is too low for good pull out of the corner as you say. In run 4, I tried 2nd when I was chasing Ray, but after bumping into the rev limiter a few times decided in run 5 to try carrying more speed into and through the corner so that 3rd could work. It didn't really work out, so next time I will use 2nd.
Thanks for the feedback Bryan.

It's available in 1080p HD if you're really keen.

Very cool with the data overlaid, I've been having a play with racerender.
You almost need a camera on a pivoting mount, you car is not always pointed in the direction it is travelling

True, but the front tyres are usually pointing in the direction I want it to go.

Understatement. Half the time it's not even on the same track as the rest of us.mazmad wrote:you car is not always pointed in the direction it is travelling
