Don't buy a new car?
If the government do introduce these monitoring/limiting devices then there will be no need for a vast majority of police vehicles (handful kept for actual crimes) and the HWP wont exist.
Keep Driving you mx5 without paying rego or having plates on as there will be noone to catch/chase you.

Re: Brave new motoring?
Can someone explain this to me?
If we are getting killed and maimed left right and centre from doing 113kph, then why is 'our' government funding our car industry, in particular $$$$$$ to GMH to produce cars like the latest HSV?
What the hell is it good for.
It has no practical towing benefits, it is purely a 'High Performance' sedan.
The thing does 0-100 in 4 secs, 12 sec 1/4mile and close to 300kph top speed.
And it was funded by the same government that is penalising us every time we look like going over the posted speed limit.
If they were serious about speeding costing lives, wouldnt they restrict their funding to produce vehicles that were efficient upto the national speed limit . Will they put black boxes in cars that are capable of breaking the national speed limit in second gear?
Or bikes?
As a famous ginger said, "please explain?"

Appearences. Vote winning. Keeping the masses fat, stupid and happy. Capitalism. Whatever you want to call it....we are apathetic, we are owned by corporations and we are happy to let the government make all our choices.

i'm all for raising the limits. but this is my take on it in our current motoring environment.
in queensland we have some crazy timeframes between roadworthys. if rules are put in place to remove old bombs from the streets. and roads are engineered for 130kph. until then. we are just dicing with death. i dont wanna be sharing a roud with a 30yo XF falcon that hasn't had a road worthing in 25 years.
(we only have 1 road in qld engineered for 130kph).
not sure of the distance people travel daily. but over 100km, the difference between 110kph and 130kph is 7.5 minutes. it not a huge time saving amount. doubt it will save anyone from fatigue.
add a old fart in a 80s corolla or caravan in your way, and the 50kph difference in vehicle speeds would be a killer.
it would really need to be in a seperated lane, kinda like T2/3 lanes, and the you'd have to hope everyone does 130kph in it, otherwise more motorists will just undertake at 130kph.
and police dont police the keep left rule now. so no chances of that happening.

Not any more up here.
Particularly on Brisbane to Sunshine Coast run.
Many vehicles sit with cruise control on 100/110 speed limit, and you only have to be 1 or 2 kph different and you end up with both lanes blocked, with multiple cars all trying to pass each other by sneaking by, for kilometres.
It is very frustrating drive now. Before, you would just give it a kick, get by, then move over and return to approx speed limit.
Do that now and you get picked up by unmarked cop cars, road side cameras or fixed cameras.
So you see this rolling mass , tailgating etc all doing the same speed.
I dont know whether one alternative is safer than the other though. But i know which one is frustrating motoring.

Re: Brave new motoring?
they are called freight trains. llok like one carriege behind another. and yeah it sucks cos you can never get into the overtaking lanes as they are sometimes 5-10 cars long.

Re: Brave new motoring?
On a road bike you can still sit at 140 on the F3 and never get blinked at. (HWP included, but I guess what are they going to do anyway.)

Re: Brave new motoring?
Ahhhhh for the good old days when we didn't have speed limits on the highways, it was up to the policeman to prove you were unsafe in your actions and your vehicle was unsound.
And we were taught to accelerate to pass a vehicle then pull back in when safe to do so. (this was one of the questions in your license test)
On the telly last night some councils in Melbourne want to scrap 40kph and go to 30kph and even one of the senior police officers said cars these days aren't made to go that slowly.

Re: Brave new motoring?
I don't particularly think that raising the speed limit is the solution.
I would much prefer to see less emphasis on a 2-3kph difference and much more on things like keeping left, merging safely, and distractions (ie: phones)
Plus, in an entirely selfish way, the new runabout can't really do 130kph happily, it barely does 100kph without complaining.
I really think more emphasis needs to be on the non-speed related issues, drink driving, running red lights, using the phone, not indicating (or looking), etc ,etc.
I'd be happy if they went back to a 10% speed tolerance (which makes sense, as total speed increases, each kph over has less of an impact to an accident. ie: hit a pedestrian at 40 vs 45 and there's a noticable difference. Hit one at 100 vs 105 and there probably won't be any difference)
I'd love to also see red light cameras at every traffic light.

Re: Brave new motoring?
130 limit in existing 110 zones will keep the traffic cops off the highway at least, hopefully it will help to fix traffic backups on the freeway and keep inexperienced and hopeless drivers off it. I see it as being positive.
