130 limit in existing 110 zones will keep the traffic cops off the highway at least, hopefully it will help to fix traffic backups on the freeway and keep inexperienced and hopeless drivers off it. I see it as being positive.

a 130 limit will never ever happen in the eastern states on what is classed as a highway. Only sections of road classed as proper freeway would ever be seen as suitable for this. Guess what, there are large sections of the hume highway between Syd and Melb that don't stack up and would need huge amounts of money to remediate.

What would the real benefit of this be? Saving an hour driving from Sydney to Melbourne? If you are in a hurry - fly. If you are on holidays then the roads are so packed you can't do the 100/110 limit available now.

And the fatigue issue is such a furfie... if you are tired after driving 9hrs to Melbourne then saving 1hr aint going to make much difference.

The issue is travelling at a safe speed and losing your licence and job for it.

That's assuming the hopeless and scared drivers stay off the freeways.


Unless there's an alternative way to get to a destination, most will just drive on the 130kph roads anyway, and just do 90kph or whatever they feel is safe.

They will feel even less safe with 50kph closing speeds though.

So hopefully they wont be on the freeways as much.

They probably won't even realise cars are behind them, let along having to dodge them.

It's more fun than driving, more economical (well, my bike probably costs the same as my car but running costs are cheaper) and there's no requirement for speed measuring devices so you can't be pinged for speeding.

I'll keep the 5 for track days though.

Was on ACA tonight about the 130kph limits. Turns out the only state in Australia that has the 130kph limits also has the highest crash/death rates in Australia. Now thats a uphill battle to sidestep that little bit of fact.

No its not, in the 7 years since dropping the limit from UNLIMITED to 130 there have been double the deaths as the previous 7 years.

Absolutely, with fines for outliers outside a certain percentage threshold. You would need to study it, but I reckon 20% would be a good start. The other option of course would be simply to make insurance companies to pay for any and all damages caused by their drivers and have no fines at all.
