NB Stock speakers, any good?

Hi So still speccing out what I will need to do when i get the MX, I will be replacing the head unit with this: http://www.sony.com.au/product/xav-701bt (I get a nice staff 45% discount making it worth the buy). Will the Stock speakers be OK or should I replace them (Also with Sony again due to the discount)?

Thanks for any info you can give. I am coming from a 10 speaker Macintosh system with factory Sub, I know it's not going to stand up to that but I do like my music at a "decent" volume without distortion. I also like to feel the bass, am I going to need to put an under seat bass unit in there?

It really depends just how much you like your audio.

You can get an 8" round speaker in the NB doors which gives a nice improvement. At one stage I had a pair of 8" rounds in the rear shelf too.

Haven't bothered to put them in the other NB yet because the stock speakers arent too bad and good speakers are heavy.

I've been pleasantly surprised how good the stock speakers sound in my NB8A with my Pioneer unit. Probably worth just fitting the head unit first and have a listen, then go from there ...

Definitely agree with headunit first. When I bought my car it had an old (CD Audio, no MP3 CD) Pioneer headunit and it sounded pretty weak, bit distorted and just not all that great. I replaced it with a new Pioneer one, and immediately gained quality noticeably, including a lot more low-end frequencies without any distortion. Both headunits were rated at 4x50w outputs, so no underpowering the speakers. Same speakers, new headunit, considerably better than it was. I had originally planned to replace the speakers after the headunit, but it wasn't necessary. I expect they may be aftermarket too though, since the headunit was professionally installed, probably did speakers at the same time. If they're stock, then I am VERY impressed.

Like most stock cars the speakers are pretty nasty but then the mx5 environment is not the best for sound quality. The cabin itself is pretty noisy compared to a proper hardtop. As an audiophile you will want to replace the speakers and do a fair bit of sound deadening and add an amp but it depends on how far you want to go.

Some adhesive rubber behind the speaker and a sheet of adhesive rubber instead of the plastic splash guard is lightweight (lighter and cheaper than dynamat), but improves sound quality.

I put Dynamat on my NA's doors. Never used this type of product before ... it works well! Even made the doors sound better when closing them - gave them a more solid sound. Way I drive these days, the extra weight made no difference ... :mrgreen:
