I bought my car off a lady hairdresser with pink 'Sexymx5' plates on it.

I rest my case.

Do you have them for sale?

I answer all abuse (read communication) on road with a smile and thumbs up - top down MX5 is poor at deflecting empty VB stubbies.

Anyone I know with a smart arse comment gets an invitation to the next track day.

Comment: "Nice car... Are you Gay?"

Reply: "No, but good luck with your search Tinkerbell"

I think the mx5 scene has really opened up in the last 5 years, especially as a lot of p-platers are finding their way into them. The JDM thing has helped awareness as well. Don't think mine can really be described as girly though.

I think that is because of Charlie's front page article in a mainstream performance mag, the same with Matt's (whitena6 II) NA6 Turbo Zoom & FF&R magazine's feature car and also the recent MCM mag/video releases.

Even though they have always been known as 'hairdressers' or 'contemptuously dismisses' cars, nowadays they have raised awareness on their chassis and potential rather than solely aesthetic appearance.

I do notice many more P platers & falcondores trying to race me lately compared to a few years ago, that must account for something!

Jeremy Clarkson and the 'TOP GEAR' program must have had a bit to do with it as well and with comments like this....

"The fact is that if you want a sports car, the MX-5 is perfect. Nothing on the road will give you better value. Nothing will give you so much fun. The only reason I'm giving it five stars is because I can't give it fourteen".
Jeremy Clarkson.
When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?

Mr M,
You are correct, I should have told the fellow that the car belonged to my GF and that she is twenty years my junior. It would have only been half a lie, the car is mine.

a week later, that still doesnt make much sense in my head if you compare that two....

Having just bought my MX - I can tell you I am very familiar with it being called a "hairdresser's car" by friends and family.

...until I take them for a spin in it.

My own father (who to be honest, is past driving fun and has dríven Mazda 6's, Accord Euros and the like for the last 20 years) was totally against the little sports car until we went for a quick drive. Then he was all "Goes around corners on rails!", "Gee she's quick!" and "Can I have a turn?" If nothing else, the MX can certainly turn a hater around quick.

Being stopped on the side of the road with the hood up on the weekend though? That drew a lot of taunts. Mostly from idiots in Commodores, but enough people in non-bogan cars stopped to offer help - "Such a shame for a beautiful car..." was one we heard a few times.
Because reasons.
