Cool story bro.
Your advice was good and made clear but if the guy is happy to get a small loan to get an mx and pay it off that's his choice isn't it?
I got my mx with a loan and while it may not be ideal and some may disapprove it was my choice and Im bloody happy with my choice and glad I done it.
To the OP just do what you want to do and be happy with it, good luck with the search too.

Thank you, I at first didn't like the idea of getting out a loan when I should just wait and save but for me it didn't make sense to buy a $1000-2000 car in the meantime when that's all that I'll be paying in interest anyway.
Cheers for the kind words, hopefully the search ends well

Cool way to welcome a keen new forum member bro.

He had made up his mind on how he would fund it, which he didn't ask for input on. Helpful advice in relation to MX-5's is what was requested.
CatchyD, a good parts supplier is www.mx5parts.co.uk Many factory bits and pieces at much less than what you pay through the local Mazda dealer!

I was the same with my first loan (yea admittedly Iv had a couple now for cars but paid them out asap) but they aren't as scary as they sound and weekly payments are easy and become part of everyday life. Not saying loans are cool obviously being able to pay cash for something is better and cheaper (no interest) but for something like a car and a cheapish car IMO I see no dramas as long as you are comfortable and happy to do it. Its not like your talking about getting a 20k loan to buy something which is 20+ years old. Iv always said if I cant pay cash for it I either dont need it or cant afford it (obviously) Id never ever own a credit card or get myself into a huge amount of debt where it couldnt be repaid comfortable and quickly, a loan for a car (within reason) I see no drama with as long as the person is happy comfortable with it.
Regarding the search, just check out a fair few and if you think you have found a winner within your budget get it checked out by Automotive Plus to see if everything checks out ok. While its nice to have a low km car these cars will run well into the 300 000 km region, as long as they have had good maintenance etc so a mx with higher km might actually be better then one with say 120k km. All Im saying is don't let a mx with higher km put you off if its in great condition and had its proper regular maintenance and records to prove that.

Re: Introducing Myself + Any Helpful Advice?
Cheers you two,
Thanks for the link to that page shall be bookmarking it with the other pages people have told me about.
Yeah, I don't really disregard a car due to it's km's I like to check the service histories and how well maintained they are etc. Because even a car with 120k on the clock could have major engine issues soon after due to previous owners running it really hard or not maintaining it.
The search shall be fun, getting to see all these mx's is quite interesting and allows me to work out what sort of price range they really should be sitting in etc based on how they compare to the majority and what not.
Looking forward to getting one and being able to join some of you Brisbane fellas at some meets/cruises/club events.

Re: Introducing Myself + Any Helpful Advice?
So ask for advice but don't take it. Brilliant idea.
I'm sure you'll get equally brilliant feedback if you ask for whether 17's are good on an NA/NB. A few will say it's great as per their own experiences, and others will show empirical logic as to why it isn't. You're still welcome to go either way but you not allowed to get upset when you ask for advice and the advice given doesn't line up with your preconceived ideas.
As I said previously, paying interest on a depreciating assets seems daft to me, but many people do it and most seem ok. If you've adequately considered the situation and believe it to be the right choice, go nuts. But regardless of that, don't get upset when people don't agree with your choices.

And equally, don't get upset when someone asks for your advice, considers it, and then decides it's not right for them.

^^^this. There are loans you should have the courage to take and then there are those you should avoid.
Buying a car on a loan is something I avoid where possible.
Buying the right investment property on a huge loan for negative gearing is something I would man up to.

Re: Introducing Myself + Any Helpful Advice?
Without going too far off topic, I too see no problem with financing a car, provided the interest rate is competitive. I have three cars, two of which are financed for much more than 20k each. It has nothing to do with not being able to afford it. I could have paid cash for them if I had wanted to, but my cash can do much more for me elsewhere. Similarly, a number of fairly wealthy people I know do not pay cash for their cars.
Also, using up all your cash to pay for a car and then either not being cake to maintain it, or being stuck car-less in the event of something going wrong with the car which requires substantial cash to fix.

But he didn't ask for advice on how to buy it did he? Also just because he asked for advice doesn't mean he has to take notice to any of it...

Re: Introducing Myself + Any Helpful Advice?
And welcome to the forum CatchyD, this is typical of what you will have to sift through to find the info your after.
If you want any answers to questions the forum is usually helpful, but there are a few who want to run your life for you as well
Hell I have stupidly borrowed money for a race car, it's real smart when you are paying off $12 worth of scrap, but hey YOLO and I wouldn't have been able to drive a car quicker than most on here would get the opportunity to.
