TGM aka THISGUYMAN's MX-5

Postby ThisGuyMan » Wed Feb 26, 2014 10:13 pm

Hey I'm currently on my L's and i hope to get a Mx-5 in 2 or 3 years.
My dream Mx-5 would be a NB8B with a huge sickening wing.

Is it a good idea to get a cheap NA for 3k i see them quite often or
is it best to steer clear ?
Hopefully I'm able to find a cheap bargain like kevin05's NB in 2 years

http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/2601/nb8com4.jpg

Also can you guys roughly tell me your running costs ? (insurance + rego) So i may gauge how much i will need to save.

The reason i like this car is cause of the friendly community + how cheap and sickening they look.

TGM,

I bought an NA for ~$5k, cheap to insure 3rd party - nothing is cheap to insure on your Ps. Too much cheaper and you'll be looking at needing work for RWC and any other repairs (unless it's a real bargain - good luck).

Figure $1500p/a for rego+3rd party insurance (in VIC).
$10-15 per 100km in fuel depending on how you drive.

Consumables like brakes and tyres are cheap.

$400 for a decent set of tyres all round, fitted, balanced and aligned. Plenty on this forum about brakes and tyres.

If you buy a bomb, it'll quickly add up, so spend a grand more on the car to save a few soon after.

also, I think you mean 'sick', rather than sickening?

tl;dr = cheap to run, cheap to own, but don't buy a bomb.

Welcome

Stu

Just save as much money as you can... and some more.

Insurance will depend on the cars age, insurer and if you have any mods.

Rego is state based and you should be able to look it up on the interwebs.

mx5's are pretty cheap for parts, servicing etc.

Read as much as you can. Remember, search miata as well as mx5.

Learn about generally mechanics.... just keep learning.
Cheers,
plohl

I bought a dirt cheap NA6, and I'd do it again. But the market will probably have changed significantly in two years.

I bought a NA6 for 3k, works absolutely fine and is much better than my car that I bought for 6k a year back.

I paid $900ish for full comprehensive insurance under my name (I'm 18 on red P's, with no insurance history) for my 89 NA6.
Rego as others have said is state based so just look it up.

You've mentioned you want a NB8B, so may I ask do you want to get a 3k NA now or do you want to wait a bit more and get a NB8B? Obviously, this is totally up to you as the choice you make is yours alone. Just curious as to which you would pick, the answer of getting NA now and then later down the track get a NB8B as well is very well an answer.

Hi TGM,
Contact the MX5 car club in your state and ask to talk to a guy who races his and see if you can help on race day. If it works who knows where it will lead you.
Regards.

Hey paul, i checked your thread your mx-5 is sweet, and i completely agree leather> the stitched stuff hiding it lol. If you dont mind could you tell me how much you've spent on mods so far ? Btw good job restoring it and everything truly sickening.

Hey CatchyD I'm probably going to wait abit longer as im currently 19 and just got my L's two months ago. I'm pretty disappointed i didn't get my L's earlier.

Cheers will do.

Do you guys think its a good idea to attack a wing to the back of the Mx-5 ? i just love the look of the wing + hardtop
Are there any cons for having a huge wing when driving regularly on the streets ?

Thanks man, both of those seats have since been replaced with black fixed back seats. :) Much better IMO. As for my mods, I don't dwell on the total expenditure because I bought the car as a project but here are the major things off the top of my head:
Coilovers: I paid around $750, new they're about $1000-1100.
Intake and full exhaust: From NitroDann I guess $1500ish
Headwork + head studs: A few hundred (I did a heap of general maintenance stuff as well when I put the new engine in, but that's not really modding)
Radiator: $150ish off Ebay
Heavy duty clutch: $300-350
Rollbar: about $1100 professionally installed
Fixed back seats: Depends hugely on what you get. Mine are about $600 combined.
Harnesses: $200-600 each. I'm ordering a pair for $250 each.

That's all the major stuff I can think of. It's not pretty but it's a hell of a lot of fun.

Cons of a big wing on the street: It will be a really strong magnet for cops, will restrict your rear vision to some extent, and people like me will keep asking you where your front splitter is. :P

Thanks for the information paul, gives me a rough figure ill need saved to restore.
Also we don't about front splitters we're freaks.

Not serious, I'll get a splitter if I ever track it.
Is the Wing that much of a Cop magnet, anyone have any experience? If the cops keep pulling me over i would probably get pissed. But I hardly see any cops in Sydney maybe once every 2 months.

All I can say to that is, Good thing you don't live in Brisbane.
I can't get to work without seeing at least 3 cops.
But, A "P" plate and a Big Wing = Cop Magnet!
You might as well lower it till the tyres are rubbing on the guards as well.
Sure to get you pulled over every time you leave the driveway.

I would advise not go get a big wing, especially if its just for looks. Just ask Magpie on here, he has a 'big' wing but its properly set up and only uses it for track, he now takes the wing off when he drives on the street as it attracts too much attention. So a P plater with a big wing will definitely attract attention.

Have you seen the ducktail lips/spoilers? They look really good imo and suit the NA really well, I know its not a big wing but maybe consider one of those? It works well with the shape of the car too.

From what I've read (no practical experience) it can be a little sketchy just bolting a big gt wing to the back of your car. If the wing isn't setup properly, it can drastically effect the handling dynamics of your car for the worse. This could lead to more understeer etc if the angle of attack isn't set properly, especially without a splitter. The other thing with having a wing on the car is that you probably have stock power.
The thing you have to remember with wings, are that they are basically gigantic air brakes. On a track you might employ one to take fractions of a second off a PB if needed, but on the street you will be adding way too much unnecessary drag to the car. Plus the speed and way you drive the car on the street will not be as consistent as you would on the track.

Regarding police, having a wing might get you pulled over because police may assume you have a non engineered forced induction system and what not. If you do infact have defective mods on your car as well as the wing, it could be interpreted as a "QUICK PULL ME OVER" sign on your car.

All that said, I won't try and stop you from doing something like this. Hell I have big dumb flares on my car and stupid sized wheels
