Just in case anyone is interested I have started doing a little bit of maintenance work on the mazda and am hoping to get it out for the first round of the Lakeside TimeAttack in a few weeks and if all goes well then the Natmeet trackday a few weeks later.

First on the agenda was to drop the front crossmember to allow access to remove the sump to install a Maruha oil baffle. Hopefully this will help with the bit of oil surge I had been experiencing under brakes into the Karrusel.

I got the crossmember out on Friday night and got the sump off and back on again last night. Here is a couple of images of the baffle in the oil pan after cleaning.

Hopefully I can get the crossmember back in in the next day or two, I will need to wait till I can get a hand from a mate since gravity won't be on my side this time!

Cheers,

Tim

So tonight I pulled the turbo off to extract one of the turbine housing bolts which had broken off inside and as I get it off I noticed some hairline cracks. On closer inspection after removing the turbo and then the housing I found that the you beaut Tial rear housing is riddled with cracks, one of which goes about 3/4 the way around the circumference of the outlet.

Pretty annoyed considering that I opted to pay substantially more to get the housing with the turbo but I am glad I was lucky enough to catch it now and not a bit later! Too bad I don't have much money to play with right now :frown: .

Here is a few images, hopefully you can see the detail, enjoy.

Cheers,

Tim

Wow that really sucks and I would have expected better! As you said, lucky you didn't damage the rest of the turbo.

Give me a call if you want a hand with the subframe.

great build.. looks really good.

Did you need to perform any guard work to fit the 9' wide 6ul's?

cheers.

Hi,

Sorry for the slow reply TGG, I have had a few things going on!

I couldn't say for sure on the guard rolling on the rear since I had already rolled them for my previous wheels but I think they would probably need a touch from standard, but I do recall having to get the roller out for the fronts. I think from memory they only needed a bit to avoid grabbing when the suspension saw bump with a bit of steering angle, the right had caught the lip and pulled it down at some point.

In other news while I am waiting patiently for my new turbine housing and I already had the splitter off to remove the sump, I decided to get stuck in and fit the front lip that I had sitting around for some time. You can see in the first image below the "temporary" airdam that I had made from the same material as the splitter. While I was there I also decided to remake the tyre spats which didn't really fit well and came very close to touching the corner of the tyre at full lock.

I have not quite finished them yet but there is an image below of of one of the new canard type spats sitting in place. I have not tried them yet and cannot say that they are exactly state of the art but they were relatively simple to make being made from the same aluminium composite panel as the splitter. They also take a little inspiration from the Peugeot 405 which Ari Vatanen drove to set the record at the time at Pikes Peak.

The original splitter/airdam assembly fitted:

So I have made a little progress in the last week or so. The new rear housing finally turned up from Tial in the states:
Image

After getting the housing back on the turbo and fitting it again I replaced the perished water cooling hoses for the wastegate and the turbo with some high temp teflon braided lines along with some fire sleeve where the lines are near the turbo.

I also replaced all the oil hoses to the cooler and oil pressure regulator while I was reassembling everything after having the sump off.

I finally ran the car for the first time in a while last Thursday night and thankfully it looks like all the new hoses seem to be OK.

Over the weekend I took it for a general practice session out at Lakeside for a shakedown which went OK. The car seemed to be running well and all the vitals read OK. I only gave it a moderate push and also took the chance to put an initial heat cycle in some new tyres.

Just a couple more little things to get done this week before the Natmeet trackday on Monday, can't wait!

Cheers,

Tim

If the weather holds out I will be very pleased if I can get back near my PB after not having a crack at it for several months.

Yes 16bit that's the stuff, it can also be found under a few other names but is generically known as aluminium composite panel. It is very easy to work with and does not give away a great deal in stiffness vs aluminium sheet at roughly half the weight.

Cheers,

Tim

I've got the car ready for the morning but the weather isn't looking crash hot. Just a bit of a clean and a once over, hopefully nothing has been missed!

I'll keep my fingers crossed, maybe the weather gods could be kind to us and hold off on the rain for a while...

The tyres went alright out at Lakeside considering the weather and I got the car home in one piece so it was a good day. I don't know that the change in canards makes any quantifiable difference but I wouldn't expect them to, they did hold together so that's good too.

I managed to do a 58.09s lap which I was quite pleased with for the conditions. If anyone is interested I threw the video of the lap up on Youtube, my apologies for the poor video and terrible sound quality, I recommend turning the video quality up in the player and the sound down!

Don't look too closely at the lines, due to the conditions, the damp/wet patches around the place and the mud on the track at most apexes I wasn't able to place the car near where I would have liked in many places.

Cheers,

Tim
