What's a Dorian and should I buy or hire?

Postby YanMa YatTai » Wed Mar 19, 2014 12:37 pm

I would like to enter the NSW Supersprints this year. I notice the mention of a Dorian which I gather is a timing device. On the Mini CC rego form it mentions you can hire one with a bracket for a fee.

If I plan to enter all supersprint rounds is it worth me purchasing rather than hire? How much and where do I get them from?

And where do I stick it?

About the timers http://www.dorian.com.au/data1_car.htm

Suggested where to install http://www.6hourrelay.com.au/Dorian%20mounting%20suggestion.pdf

To purchase try Dorian Industries, Factory 1, 29 Graham Court, Hoppers Crossing VIC, 3029. Phone: (03) 9931 1371.

You buy the bracket ($10 from memory), and can hire the Dorian.

There are a number of places to attach the bracket, and on MX-5s they are typically put under the car, forward of the front wheels. I am happy to remove my bracket and loan it to you so you can sort out a mounting in advance of getting your own bracket at the 1st supersprint round.

If you are considering buying a Dorian, it may be worth holding off, as I am trying to put together a group buy for NSW MX-5 club members.

While you're just getting started, you're better off hiring the Dorian because they are a substantial investment ($500+ I think). After doing supersprints for the last four years, I'm still hiring! (although I'm keen on the group buy)

After the Natmeet track day Bryan I'd like you comments on the transponders we use at Lakeside and QR. The transponder is $80 to buy [or can be hired], the 'lapceiver' in-car display is $120, matched to your transponder number, the lap times [ie: 1:09.3245] will flash up in a second or so - not sure if they will hire out a 'lapceiver' but will see you on the day

$370 was what I paid 6-7 years ago. Not sure on current price but mine paid itself off.

In for a group buy if the price is right. $30 hire fee remains attractive though...

Only $105 for a Lapceiver now Roger, at least that's what the sign hanging in the QR office says. I have one that I don't use, really shouldn't have bought it in the first place. Hasn't recorded a laptime since my first track day.

If you are not using it on the Natmeet track day I might see if it's OK for Guran [Bryan] to use it and evaluate mate - let me know - just a matter of entering the transponder number into it that he uses

Thanks
