I was really excited about having a go at Lakeside, and it turned out to be far better than I could possibly have anticipated. Fabulous track and perfectly suited to MX-5s! Loved the elevation & camber changes, and the variable conditions on the day meant that every run was different with a new challenge appearing somewhere unexpected. It's even great from the pits, as you're right in the middle of the action - a total immersion experience. This is definitely a "bucket list" track.

My best lap in Little Reddy's "swansong" was 1:08.8749. I won the regularity too - with a wet track and pure guesswork on the nominated time (1:16.0) I scored 19 points on the out-lap (which I didn't realise was being scored), and then 1, 0, 0, 1, 3 thanks to a traffic-free run. Very happy with both results!

It was great to finally put faces and voices to some familiar forum names. In particular, thanks Roger for your company and advice, and thanks Ross for the loan of the lapceiver. What a great little piece of kit that is. It would be wonderful to see this system rolled out at some tracks in NSW.

OK so I've gotta ask? What's the lap record for a stock NA6? Can't find it anywhere on the forum or the club website.

I have heard Doug from qr did a 66 way back when he first got an NA - not sure if it was an NA6 or 8...

Your not even close

At a guess 4 maybe 5 seconds quicker than your best lap time.

Your time was bloody good for your first time though!

Really? On street tyres? I can see where a couple seconds could be found, but R-specs would be needed to find 4-5 seconds.

I've been thru the Club results for the past 2 years and only ONE NA6 stock ran, Fred Chapman but unable to locate a time for him - maybe that's one that JBT could answer

Thanks for the nice comments Bryan, we think we are a pretty friendly bunch and of course the 'mob' from the southern States proved to be just the same -that really made for a fantastic day!! Oh well, coffee BP south tomorrow morning seeing I have the week off, just may catch a few earlybirds heading back south - have a safe trip home!

Maybe I just better head for Tasmania in 2016!!

You NSW guys really performed well for lakeside virgins
CBs 65s was very impressive
I will however post his spin and near miss when I get home and download the gopro
I was sure he was going to have to walk home

Spot on, there's no chance of running a 63 in a bog stock NA6 on road tyres. For reference, Matt in his naturally aspirated NB has managed a 62.8 with coilovers, sway bars, aero work, and running on NT01s I think it was? And that seemed to be on the ragged edge, right off the bat a stock NB is quicker than a stock NA around there, plus all that suspension work, and still only just breaking the 62s.

To do a 68, in questionable weather, on road tyres, in a stock NA6, on a scary track with no previous experience on, is great. I would need to see proof to believe that anything below a 67 is possible from a stock NA6 on roadies, and even that is pushing it.

Glad you liked the lapceiver, although I don't use it myself, it is a nifty little gadget. It does mean that you may be looking at your steering wheel when you're hitting your turn in point for the kink though, gotta keep yourself focused.

Stock na6 motor no aero just coilovers.
I can't drive for poo
IMO, I'm bloody sure you could get a good driver in a na6 a high 63 wounldnt be out of the question.
But as I said that's just my thoughs

As in 15x6s, or as in Falken Azenis 615s? I did really mean your typical road tyres, not 'just barely legal for the road track-tyres'. Plus coilovers alone I suspect would be worth a good bit, I know with stock suspension I've been having issues with the tyres rolling over onto the sidewall, just having a full contact patch alone would be worth time. I also doubt you're 4 seconds off the capability of the car. The slower a car is, the smaller the gap will be between an amateur and an incredible driver. The faster the car is, the larger that gap gets. I don't believe that there are 4 seconds to be found, in a just-barely-over-a-minute track, in a car as slow as a stock NA6.

A driver of a classic sports car like the MX5 NA6 would just have to improve by less than 6% to go from a 67 to 63 second lap of Lakeside.

I do know that, but that only matters if you assume a 67 is not toward the upper limit of the car's capabilities. You could just as easily say that about the outright lap record; Paul Stokell's 46.6second lap needs to be improved by 'only 5%' to have run a 44.3. That small improvement is only relevant if the car is not at it's limits already.

My mistake. I do genuinely hear that argument regarding unachievable lap times though so it can be hard to tell sometimes when it's written in text

The law of diminishing returns for the driver comes into play, whilst this is an economic concept it has applications in racing.

Lets find a stock NA, a 'brilliant' steering wheel attendant, a few other drivers of differing abilities and settle this Lakeside lap thingy once and for all.
