Honestly I thought the new MX5 would be running with Rotary engine. As I remember I saw a article about Mazda will replace all the vehicles with Rotary engine in 2015 or 2016.

Why would you replace a vehicle with an engine? Wouldn't it be too hot and lumpy to sit on, for one thing?
In all seriousness, rotary, Mazda, and 2014/5 may have been uttered on separate pages of a magazine once, but that does not mean any conclusions can be jumped to. The only rumour I've heard about rotary is one may go in the next RX7/8, if such a car ever happens. Also hearing about a suitcase sized rotary to recharge batteries, but not as the primary power source.

Haha, I mean I thought Mazda would use rotary engine in their cars in 2015 or 2016.

Would be surprised if Mazda gets the attention it wants with a 1.5L SkyActive engine.... seems too under powered in today's standards

Sure, but if you pull up at the lights, and someone with a stock NB or NC leaves you in the dust, you might not feel so happy about that?

Regardless of how much power it comes out with, people will still think it's underpowered. How it sells will ultimately come down to price.

I think a lot of people here would be surprised with what a little engine can achieve with a small turbo on the side. I had a old suzuki swift gti with a td04 turbo off a wrx on the stock 1.3l motor and it went like the clappers, would flog alot of higher powered cars.
Im sure we can all safely say that the new mx5 wont have a turbo engine. Id even bet money on it. I realize the ND mx5 is an all new car and so on but Mazda havent put small turbo engines in any of there other models like other car makers have. They have stuck to the N/A method and with their skyactive technology managed to make them more fuel efficient while producing more performance.
I think the new mx5 will have the skyactive 2l or maybe even the 2.5 like in the sp25.
It wouldnt matter if it had a turbo 2l, people would still say its not powerful enough. Even the people who say the NA6 is underpowered havent dríven a truly slow and underpowered car.

My previous car before the MX was a Suzuki Jimny... can confirm MX5 felt like a super car after that. I don't think the MX-5 is underpowered. I agree that it "feels" fast and when you're approaching redline, it's hard to wipe the smile off your face

I think the point is that the market has become aware of the fact that driving feel, price and performance (as a package) is important. The MX5 in 1989 re-kindled that in a world where fast (straight line) but poor handling cars were plentiful, and so were good handling but expensive - but the NA6 MX5 was the first of a cheap, good handling and fast enough. Fast forward 20 years and the standard flock of cars available for $50K handle well, go fast and feel good. You only have to see how the NC stacks up to others and the verdict is that its good, but the avg sedan from Ford handles just as well and is a blast of fun for the same price. It isn't just about having an open top. In the 1980s many other cars with open tops existed, but they either were bad handling or cost too much, or both.
I just don't know if Mazda can repeat 1989 by releasing just a "good handling" car and assume it will be enough - especially if the price isn't going to be a ground breaking aspect of the new package.

The MX-5 was anything but cheap when released here. They were far less affordable then at over $30,000 in 1990.

Thats true, I heard that when new my nb8b was around $45k or something like that. I suppose in relation to other cars of similar specs at the time it may have been cheaper and much better.
Gslender - I get what you mean. Probably not really comparable but before my mx5 I had a 2012 corolla and through the twisties it actually wasnt too bad, put a smile on my face anyway. Modern cars have come along way, even though I think way too much technology is been put into modern cars they have definitely come along way.
Mazda know what they are doing though. They know that the mx5 is the best selling sports car in the world, they know how to make a good sports car. Granted not too many people would be able to go to the dealer and purchase a new NC since they cost around $55k new BUT Im sure they arent going to mess things up. They got the mx5 right the very first time and carefully planned new models to keep all the enthusiasts happy and to keep improving the new models from the last and its worked, people have their favourite model/year but in reality every generation of mx5 is perfect or near perfect, its a genuine sports car thats a thrill to drive everytime your behind the wheel.
The biggest thing for me is, I hope they dont put that ridiculous and stupid engine stop start crap on that pretty much all new cars have these days. Stupidest thing ever imo. Would be nice if the price was a bit lower too, around the $40k - $45k thats a more reasonable price imo.

What was it $30000 before on roads and a/c optional?
If I remember correctly a Corolla SX (100kw 1600) was about $20K back then. IN fact the newly released 165kw SS Commodore was about the same price as a MX5.
