Mr nanotech wrote:Somebody can call me out on this, but from what I read about the gt86 pricing; the reason they could get the figures so low was due to the partnership between Toyota and Subaru.
This allowed each company to offset the others costs. Basically it allowed each company to spend have the developmental budget they would have spent had they have made a single car in a single house.
Mazda on the other hand have been developing the mx5 soli for the last two and a bit decades now and still have to recover fev costs as well as profit at the end of the day.
Maybe the partnership with fiat could allow them to pull down prices but I very much doubt it.
Price has already been established at the highest people are willing to pay for the mx5, for the past 20 years.
Lowering that price point probably wouldn't be economical.

This would be where the Mazda/Fiat/Alfa partnership would come in then.

Sure but don't forget the Mx-5 already has an established price point at roughly $50k, that customers are willing to pay. Although in theory they could charge less for the vehicle, why would they if they knew they could set the price the same as before and still guarantee sales. Mazda after all are a business, not a charity.

The other thing you should also note is that with a co-dev project, the price may stay the same but you could potentially get more for your dollar. This puts some justification to the potential of a turbocharged model as well as the new multilink rear end seen in some promo photos.

I'm not an economist so I'm just surmising here. I dare say that we could debate this to death and get nowhere since we don't have access the financial information and production costs Mazda will be using to base it's pricing.

sadly not enough customers at 50k but this has to be expected for a model that is 9 years old

Davekmoore, did you get allocated a 25th anniversary?

No doubt at all that the MX5 has become closer to a main stream toy rather than an enthusiasts car. The 86 and BRZ has done much the same and it makes sense that it has a somewhat broader appeal to see in a very sophisticated and tough world market. Perhaps what would be fun is a new thread for us all to give our two bobs worth on what the next car will be- i.e. $ price, standard fitment , engine, transmission options and of course weight..

My guess is longer wheelbase than nc but overall smaller car. Longer bonnet with cabin further back similar to bmw z platform or hondas s2k.
No more nc style arches, no alteza lights.
Back to 4x100 with smaller 16" wheel and around 100-150kg lighter curb weight than current models.
1.5l and 2l engine option, one of which is turbo.

That is my guess based on information given out by mazda.
Betting the price stays at 50.

Yup. Pre-sold. So now 3 (three) in the last 7 months. Yay!

The only turbo will be the Fiat model.

Mazda just needs to stick the high comp 95RON 2L into it. Standard that motor has 121kw. Few tweaks and you'd have 130kw.
The 1.5 could be the same as found in the new Mazda2. Top spec has 82kw.

If it's 50K then the MX5 is a dead duck.

Just price ND like this, adjusted for exchange rate, for a basic 2.0L Skyactiv with 114kw. Sold, and sold, and sold, by the thousands.

S/hand values drop when they place a rego sticker on the front window, have a look at what NC's are bringing.

New motor vehicles yes. Rare or collectible models not so.

tell this to a GTHO Phase 4 owner and he'll tell you how he bought it for $25k and sold it for $75k 5 years later!

Just have to pick the right models....!
