New motor vehicles yes. Rare or collectible models not so.

tell this to a GTHO Phase 4 owner and he'll tell you how he bought it for $25k and sold it for $75k 5 years later!

Just have to pick the right models....!

You are talking windfall profits, aint ever gonna happen with the mx-5 or the 86, might eventually happen with 4c if it is discontinued in a few years.

The delorean is a sh*t car but is worth big bucks because nobody bought it and the movie glorified it.

Delete "an affordable" and insert "a light weight".

What year was that? 1990 :)

By contrast, the MX5 did indeed lob onto the US market in 1990 with a base price of 13.8K. That same year the Honda Civic started at $6.6K.

lets get back to a bit of levity: and observation of where the market has been. The MX5 has been affordable in its class i.e. a convertible sports car. Any doubters merely to look at historical pricing to its so called competitors ( not all in convertible guise) e.g. BMW ( Z3 4) Audi TT, MB SL , Porsche, Nissan 350 370 etc. MX5 did not get to be the longest running best selling if it did not have the right pricing and formulae. People can still buy NCs as affordable vehicles used and that means someone bought them new. Z4 as an example are roughly double the price of an MX5 and to many just a folly.

What however is now rather obvious is that there is a different asking price for sporting and other cars. The WRX has just been released with amongst other things 195KW and CVT transmission at only $2000 and the car is around the $40,000 mark- it looks terrific vehicle and a return to form. For that price you can also Focus ST, Renaults, 86/BRZ etc. You can also buy apparently one of the most fun sporting cars of the lot a much lower price- the Fiesta ST- greatly applauded by Motor who were driving such beasts as Audi R8 ) and HSV .

The clearly obvious conclusion is that Mazda must join the pack with the MX5 or as mentioned by Barmy exit the market in Au.

The big elephant yet to enter the room is the Toyobaru 86 convertible.

Suggestion late last year was that this would never happen.

Never say never, I bet there are some people itching to do it once the factory has some extra capacity.

Extra capacity? They don't need extra capacity as the 86/BRZ isn't selling as well as expected.

I doubt capacity has anything to with it. These issues come down to a business case and payback of investment.

I agree with Dann and Morlock, simultaneously
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

So, I went to a MX-5 Club of Victoria and Tasmania awards lunch on Sunday to get my 15 year badge :) . There were two representatives from Mazda there, one being the Mazda Australia Senior Product manager/director. He gave a speech on the life of the MX-5 from conception to future. He also provided some facts and teasers on the ND.

The ND will stay with Mazda’s stated philosophy of Jinba ittai 人馬一体. In other words, it is all about the dynamics, not the power.

A question was raised about the size of the engine, but he declined to answer.

Fiat, not Alfa Romeo will share the ND chassis. Fiat will provide their own engine, tweak the dynamics and will use their own body design.

Both the Fiat and Mazda versions will be built in Japan.

A soft top will be available, inferring that a hard top will lead the sales charge.

Mazda have acknowledged the price challenge raised by the ’86/BRZ, and are working to address this.

Expect the ND to be around 100 kg lighter than the NC, while meeting the required safety/emission standards.

There will be no shared parts between the ND and any other previous model, including the famous side repeater.

While the overall length of the ND will be less than previous models, it will cater for taller drivers.

Bring on 4th September for the global release of the ND.
