Electrical - What is this??

Postby MXMatt » Sun Jul 27, 2014 6:20 pm

Hi everyone,
Just a couple of little electrical questions, this car has been butchered by the PO's (possibly more than one of them) and I have been slowly undoing years of neglect!
In the engine bay I have found a couple of odd things I would like to sort out

First is this Blue and White wire near the upper thermostat housing - it has been cut and wrapped in tape - anyone know where this should go??

Image

Next is this plug up next to the 12V power source just behind the Passenger side headlight???

Image

Then there is this connector all the way up near the Diagnostic ports (Under the Wiper Motor area)

Image

Lastly the PO had an aftermarket air cleaner on this that has broken it's cable tie mounts and came to rest on the exhaust shield - obviously got a little hot - and did this to the wiring - it SEEMS to be working OK, can this be replaced or just leave it alone?? I am hoping it is just the plastic cover that has melted

Image

If anyone can spot other trouble areas in this picture - point them out - I would rather fix them now than when they get troublesome later..........

Image

If anyone can shed some light I would be grateful
Matt

PS. Just n case anyone wanted to see a picture of the whole car lol.......................

We are in the same boat, I've had to go through and fix a whole bunch of stuff from PO's.

Blue wire in first pic. No idea, thought maybe air con?
Plug in 2nd pic. Does not connect to anything.
Plug in 3rd pic under relays. Does not connect to anything.
Melted wire cover. There is a sensor in your maf. If the car still runs properly, just leave it. PITA if the wires have melted though.

Appears to be a long nose engine, so I'm guessing 91 onwards.
Brake fluid seems good. Maybe check the wires under the blue tape (near the fuse box)
Hard to tell from the photo but the hose clamp near tps looks suspiciously close
The vent hose (near the oil cap) is not standard.
Your missing a cap of the drivers side headlight adjustment.

Your also missing some extractors

Rear wheel looks to have a bit too much neg camber but could be just how it looks in the pic.
Suspension looks to be lowered or if standard springs, has sagged.

Hope that helps :)

Looks pretty clean for a neglected car. Welcome.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Ok, it's been over a year since I've even touched mine, so a couple of these are dim distant memories. But could be right.

First one: Power steering if it is fitted. There's a place on the top of the motor which is normally located round there. Looks like you don't have PS, so it's redundant.

The others: There are a few redundant plugs in MX5s. Depends on what options you have. Some are for diagnostics. If everything's running fine, I wouldn't worry about them too much.

On your high pressure air-con line (the red one running at the top) what's the mark in the middle of it between the two brackets?

Thanks everyone! Exactly the kinds of feedback I was hoping for

SPEED -
*Will have to check the forum for info on your PO fixes I might gain some valuable info from them as well
*Thanks for the info on the plugs, will drive me nuts to not know what they are for even if I don't need them, so will spend some quality time with wiring diagrams and multimeter to suss them out
* Long nose (1992 model)
* Wire under the Blue tape appears to be left over from PO - and runs back to a supplementary Relay Block holder - will check that out more with time
*Will check out the hose clamp - had not noticed that one
*Added a Headlight adjusting cap to my list of track down parts
* Not sure on the suspension and alignment situation, will have to get it up on a hoist and check it out further

OKIBI -
Thanks - looks can be deceiving - it has obviously been well cared for at various stages of its life but equally abused, it has had many different owners and at one stage had a "Car Yard" doors closed and just paint around the badges kind of repaint, but the interior is very well used and mechanically - well lots and lots of work to bring it up to a reasonable / reliable standard again

PAMEX -
*No power steer at the moment - maybe it had it fitted at some stage - will have to investigate further as I do want to fit it!
*There are a few idle - running issues but I don't think it is related to the plugs - but I might chase up some wiring diagrams and see what i can find - maybe some quality time with a multimeter is in order!
*Had not noticed that, will have to check it out

Re the suspension, standard coils are thin and black.

I haven't posted any issues or fixes. Was thinking of doing a build thread, once I'm sure which way I'm going with the car.
Plan is to do a fair chunk of the mods, taking pics while I go, then post a bunch of stuff in a single hit. :)

Feel free to pm me re fixes. Always happy to help if I can.

Best of luck and welcome to the club :)

Power Steering is a nice to have, but you learn to move and turn in time. In respect to alignment if no power steering try not to have max caster, say around 3 deg on both sides.
