Join your local MX-5 club

Postby Okibi » Sat Aug 02, 2014 1:08 pm

If you're contemplating joining your local MX-5 club now is a good time to join to maximise your membership dollars.

MX5CarTalk can not run cruises or motorsport events so if you really want to explore the potential of your MX-5 I recommend joining a car club.

The website find your local MX-5 club is http://www.mx5.com.au

I expect most clubs will let you attend a (non subsidised) cruise to get a feel for the club before joining.

Basic Annual club costs
(Yes I know there are different types of membership people can look at the individual websites for these)
NSW $55 for full members ($80 first year)
VIC $100 for full members ($125 first year, less for pdf mag)
SA $40 for full member ($60 first year)
QLD $75 for full member ($100 first year)
WA $70 for full member ($95 first year)

As an example the MX-5 club of Western Australia ran 57 events (16 club only motorsport) in the last 12 months, you get a lot for your membership dollar.

I understand that the MX-5s clubs aren't for everyone and that sometimes their event days/times don't fit within your own schedule.

If your local club doesn't have enough of the events you'd enjoy or think other MX-5 owners would enjoy than i'm sure most club committees would be happy to have new members join and help them run new events.

Apart from the clubs that farm out membership renewals, all of those involved volunteer their time. Across all the MX-5 clubs in Australia that's a lot of very dedicated MX-5 enthusiast who sacrifice their own time to make sure other club members have a great time.

If you're not involved in your local club then give it a go, if you are then thank you.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

+1 for having a look on your state website.
For example, it's almost half price for VIC membership if you opt for an online delivery of the magazine (which is monthly).
Went to Phillip Island with the VIC club and they had hired a garage to keep us out of the rain, which was much needed.
It's good to have someone looking out for you when your new to the track.

I have been thinking of the MX Club's but it is a lot of membership money, just not sure I could justify the $125 bucks in value to me - it would make it the most expensive car club I have ever joined and over three and a half hours drive to attend meetings or events, might have to look more local options

The Victorian MX-5 Club have an affiliation with a couple of retailers that provide discounts and deals from other suppliers often pop up, in a recent group buy from RDA I purchased a set of front and rear EBC brake pads for $150.00. Living in Central Victoria is no barrier to club events as there is a Ballarat based chapter and some of the events allow access to places that one might never see.
The best bit is to see the kids faces light up when a group drives through a small Vic town somewhere.
Greg.
When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?
