Jack's NB8B

Postby JackF » Fri Aug 08, 2014 7:40 pm

Hi all,

My name's Jack, I'm 20, I'm from Perth, and I've been a lurker on the site for nearly a year now. I've always been into cars/car design/motorsport, since I can remember. Up til now, all my family's cars have been Euros, and I'm definitely a euro guy at heart. But while I loved my first car (VW Golf MK4, below) I was craving something more... rear-wheel drive. Basically, I was on the hunt for something with excellent handling (as my MK4 had had, despite being FWD and slow), lightweight, reliable, subtly styled, and not cop-bait. Power wasn't really a consideration, but I did want something that could be upgraded as I grew as a driver.

My first car: 2002 Golf MK4, in the state I sold it (as it happens, to my best mate's brother, so I still see it all the time :D )
Image

My second car: 1980 Golf MK1 Diesel (I still have this, and I love it to bits. I don't have space for two cars, so it's being sold soon, but I will definitely own another at some stage.)
Image

This being Perth, and me being a young person, I've been exposed to a lot of cheap RWD Nissans/Toyotas etc, which fit the bill as far as performance and price goes, but lack, uhh... style, taste, subtlety, whatever you want to call it. Not wanting to go the Nissan path as a number of friends did (don't get me wrong, I would buy an RB25-powered two-tone S13 in a hearbeat, and my mate's white-on-white R33 Skyline is gorgeous, if you ignore the fact it's an R33. It's just Perth is over-saturated with bad examples of them), I started looking for other cars that would suit my needs. Old-school stuff like E30s and KE70s were incredibly tempting, but my parents wanted me to have airbags, if it was going to be a daily, and not wanting to be kicked out of the house any time soon, I agreed.

Then, at a local meet late last year (Custom Cars & Coffee, for all you locals. I'm one of the guys who make the C&C videos btw), I saw Okibi's black SE. MX5s had never been on my radar, for some reason, but it was the perfect fit. Small, light, nimble, pretty stylish, plenty of room for improvement, and not a typical cop target. So I started trawling this forum, searching gumtree every day, and starting to save money. Cut to 9 months later, and I just bought a 2001 NB8B. I don't have any photos in perfectly-stock form, but you all know what they look like.

Basically, it's the cheapest NB8B I've ever seen (picked it up for $6,990 from a dealer). I'm not a fan of silver, but for that price I really don't mind. It's just crossed 200,000kms, but it's in really good condition. Drives perfectly; just as well as any I test-drove with half the kms. I managed to negotiate a new radiator (old one was cracked) and a new timing belt into the price as well. That does however, mean that the rest of the 200,000km service still needs to be done. So, water pump, seals and gaskets will be happening soon, I guess, once I get my hands on a detailed service manual and some free time.

Mudguards were removed immediately (still haven't cleaned underneath them yet tho  ), and the power antenna unplugged (I never listen to the radio, and I'd rather not drive something that looks like a remote-control car...). Then me and a mate started fabbing up a side-mount number plate bracket.

My Voodoo shift knob and handbrake handle arrived this morning from the US.

Shifting actually feels a bit smoother, probably cos of the weight of the knob. Also I much prefer the spherical shape over the stock knob, and the wrinkle black finish looks great, so that's a plus. Just waiting for the MiataRoadster SSK I ordered in the recent group-buy, which should be here some time next month. I got the tall/angled shifter, also in wrinkle black.

So to conclude this first post, my plans for the car:

Basically I want to get into track days, which means a roll bar, new brake pads and fluid, and other bits and pieces in the short term. Later, 15x8s and semi slicks, coilovers (looking at MCA Blues atm), coolant reroute, etc.

In the short term, I've got a Nexus 7 tablet which will be replacing the stock head-unit. Amp, USB DAC, charger and all the other bits and pieces I need for that are in the mail, should be looking at getting that in within a month or so. Also got an OBD2 bluetooth adapter coming to use with the Torque app, which will be nice. Planning to remove the centre console, and make up a blanking plate for the bottom of the tombstone which will house window switches, and power and volume switches for the tablet, as well as a laser-engraved shift pattern (which my voodoo knob doesn't have).
Also looking at getting NA flat door cards with pull-straps, as I'm not a huge fan of the NB door cards. I would probably carpet the bottom of the NA card as well, which will go well with the centre-console delete.

Eventually, I'll be installing a turbo setup (I know, every kid says this). WA doesn't have P-plate restrictions on turbo cars, so I could do it now if I wanted, but I'm going to wait. Partly cos I know I will bin it if I turbo it now, partly because I'm not yet good enough at TIG welding to make my own manifold/exhaust/cooler piping myself, which I really want to do. So it won't happen until I am good enough at welding (or an SE manifold comes up for sale...). That said, I've already got a (free, good condition) T28 to use from my mate's R33, as well as (free) intercooler piping. I'll be building a MegaSquirt ECU to use with it (maybe only a DIYPNP tho, depends how committed I am to the idea of building a proper one), getting used RX8 injectors, and picking up as much of the exhaust for free/cheap as possible. Apparently V8 commodores are a good source of $10 hi-flow cats? I know 2.5" exhaust pipe can be had for beer money... Basically I want to keep the entire turbo/exhaust build under $1500 including tune. Achievable? We'll see.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Plenty will be happening in the coming months. And if you know of a hardtop (preferably with demister) or MX5+ rollbar in Perth atm, let me know! :)

Cheers,
Jack

Welcome to the Obsession Jack!
Nice looking example of an NB you have there mate, I look forward to seeing how it (and you) develop over time.

One of the best things about MX5's is there are so many different options and paths you can take with changing and improving them you're unlikely to have something exactly the same as anyone else, they always seem to end up becoming something uniquely your own, which is exactly how it should be!

Make sure you enjoy the journey along the way and join the local MX5 club (Obiki's the President I think) as that's a great way to get into the track scene in a friendly and supportive environment. :)

I think the changeover occurred sometime during 2001..... :?

Easiest way to check is to look at the fuse panel just above your right knee in the driver's seat (behind the cover).
If there's an OBDII port there you've got, errrrr..... OBDII.....

You're both quite right.. I don't have OBDII.. That's what I get for not researching enough, I guess. Oh well, at least the bluetooth adapter i got was only $10, not $150 like some I was looking at. Just means the MegaSquirt will be pushed up the to-do list :)

Welcome to the obsession!

My previous car was a sunlight silver nb8b so I do have a soft spot for them.

Obd2 came out on the nb8c. So around 2003 onwards it was standard.

Looking forward to the updates!

Thanks Regie! :)

Few more parts for the tablet install/centre console delete arrived today. Four momentary-off-momentary switches for the window switch relocation, and tablet volume and power, plus a bunch of cables. The switches are pretty hefty, so I found some ~2mm steel sheet to use as a blanking plate for the bottom of the tombstone where the switches will be mounted. Also got some slightly thinner steel sheet to make up a fascia/mounting system for the tablet itself. Both bits will either be anodised black or painted with black wrinkle paint. The tablet will be permanently installed, so the goal is: clean, OEM-ish looking install, and the tablet mounted securely enough that removing it will pose serious challenges if someone tries to steal it. (Also why I want a hardtop..)

Switches:

Image

I also finished off prepping the software side of the tablet. It's now rooted, running Timur's kernel with CyanogenMod10, and using Tasker for app management. Music will run through a USB Digital-to-Analog converter, to the amp and out through the factory speakers. Also got offline maps, so that's useful. May possibly add a front-facing camera to the system as well (so I don't scrape the front on things once it's lowered. Reversing is easy enough without a camera). I'd use an HD webcam (disassembled so it takes up less space) mounted somewhere in the front bar, connected via USB, managed by Tasker so that the camera app launches when certain GPS/accelerometer conditions are met. e.g. speed under 10kph, moving forward, etc. Difficulty will arise in trying to get it to distinguish between stopping for a traffic light, or bumper-to-bumper traffic etc, and actually parking. Got a few ideas, but we'll see.

Image

Anyway, not a substantial update. That's all for now :)

So, another smallish update.

When I bought the car, the driver's side window would only go down about 15cm, and then stop. So a few days ago I thought I'd see if I could fix it.

To take the door card off, there are 3 screws and 3 plastic scrivets. Undo these, prise the bottom of the door card away from the door, then pull upwards to remove it.

Image

Image

The black goop is horrible and gets everywhere.

Image

After fiddling around a bit, I found a cable that was loose inside the door, and was getting caught underneath the window as it goes down

Image

From below:
Image

Basically the trim clip that holds the cable in place had broken, so I replaced it with a zip tie.

Image

Door card went back on (place the door card on from the top, then snap the bottom back into place), and problem solved!

Also removed the centre console at the same time. Don't have pics, but it's pretty simple. Only thing is that there is a screw under the window switches, so be sure to pull that assembly out first; a small flat-head screwdriver or a blunt knife will do it. In other news, my upper dust boot is thoroughly cooked. Excitedly awaiting my miataroadster short shifter kit in order to replace the dust boot.

Started working more seriously towards mounting the Nexus in my dash. Still awaiting a lot of parts, but here's the progress so far.

Removed stock head unit:

Image

Easiest thing to do is remove all the dash trims, and the trim pieces on the sides and middle of the head unit (and probably unplug the negative battery terminal too). I then used a small flat-head screwdriver to push the metal tabs on the radio cage inwards, while pulling the head unit out from the hole in the centre. Repeat for the other side. No need for proper radio removal keys or anything.

Image

Out and unplugged.
Image

Basically, the idea was to use the stock radio cage to mount the tablet. This way, I have hard mounts for the amp and other electronics, and can use the radio plug for power/ground, so that I don't have to cut up the stock radio wiring loom. Also means the tablet will be just as difficult (/easy?) to steal as the stock radio.

So I stripped the radio down, pulled the PCBs out and reassembled the cage.

Image

Cut this plug off the PCB, will be pulling all the pins out except for what I need to run the tablet and associated bits.

Image

Tablet put in place.

Image

aaaand very loosely test fitted.

Image

Still loads more work to do, and parts to arrive, but it's coming together :D  Might try 3D print a fascia plate for it, probably less effort than trying to make one out of sheet metal. I'll see how I go..

Cheers guys :)

Uni's been busy (3rd year is hard, who would have guessed), so the tablet install and my various other small, fiddly projects have been put on hold for the moment. In other news, I ordered a Sparco Sprint V from Racedeal.com ($450 shipped, arrived in less than a week) and got it in, on the stock rails. I fit in it reasonably well (not quite as well as my mate's Sparco Rev, but I guess you get what you pay for), and it obviously holds you in pretty well, so I can't complain.

Image

Image

I also picked up a hardtop this morning, after searching for one for a few months. Classic red non-demister model, good condition except for a couple of chips on the back edge. Got nice dark tint, too. I'll probably pick up some gloss black vinyl wrap as a cheap temporary solution to the colour until I have time to paint it.

Image

For some reason the hardtop makes the car look taller. Need to get coilovers ASAP!

Quick update: Not much has happened in the last few months, other than installing my MiataRoadster short shifter kit. Holy hell, this thing lives up to the hype. Not a whole lot to say about it other than, a) it's absolutely amazing, and b), if you don't have one, get one.

Got a pile of bits to install, and a long list of things to do/make once I finish uni for the year, but until then I'm just enjoying driving the thing every time I get into it.

Me and my mate's newly purchased NA6 after a top-down cruise (for me, at least) out to the Swan Valley for the Italian Car Day yesterday.

So it's been a while since an update, but I've been quite busy with the car. Since the last update, I've done a few track events, bought and installed some parts, and figured out a few things that need attention. Here goes..

Back in January I bought an Automotive Plus single hoop twin diagonal tall-boy rollbar, had it powder-coated satin black, and installed it. Not a particularly difficult process, but a) my soft top has a few holes in it and I probably should have just taken it out before putting the bar in (you'll be putting it up and down a hell of a lot), and b) when the instructions say spacer (9) may be modified to get a better fit, that is to say, you will absolutely need to cut a couple of mil off each side if you want any hope of getting a hardtop on. Figured that one out rather late in the day...

Other than that, fitting the bar is pretty easy. General quality of the bar is excellent, visibility is not reduced one bit, and you can't even really see it from outside the car, which I guess is probably a good thing police-wise. And it stiffens the chassis up nicely :)

Image

Image

Next were coilovers. I bought some used CST Zero-1 coils (thanks Spikey) which have monotube shocks, 8kg/6kg springs, 15 way damping adjustment, pillowball top mounts and they came with with new poly lower mount bushes in them. Bump stops were cooked though, so I've got to measure the shaft diameter and buy some new ones, no big deal really. First impressions are excellent: full soft damping feels almost identical to stock, but with slightly better bump damping. Full firm is not as harsh as I thought it might be, but also is not particularly too firm for daily driving. On track, they're just excellent. I could see myself possibly changing the fronts to 9kg springs at some point, but for now there are so many other priorities...

Image

Image

The hardest part of installing them was taking the original struts out. Rears were reasonably ok, but the fronts were a massive pain. The spring compressors we used might have been a tiny bit too big (I bought them for use on a Golf a few years back) but really the double A-arm fronts were just plain annoying. Getting the new coils in was easy, literally 5 mins per corner.

I also bought a diff housing with 3.9 gears installed (again, thanks Spikey), as well as a Kaaz 1.5 way clutch pack diff center. I haven't installed these yet, as I've got to scavenge a bunch of bits from my current diff and need a full weekend free, but I drove a mates '89 NA6 with a VLSD at a track event and I'm very much looking forward to the different feel of the LSD.

Other than doing oils, that's about all i've done to the car in recent months. My tablet install still hasn't happened, I've put it off in favour of things that'll make more track time possible.. speaking of which, I've now done 3 events: a CAMS Come & Try day at Barbagallo, a private session at the RAC track with a bunch of subarus, and a Motorkhana Come & Try day at Tiger karts. All were a lot of fun, but the motorkhana day was just amazing. Tossing up taking part in the championship this year.. Anyway here's a video from that day:

and my car at the RAC track

Image

Other than one issue at the RAC track, the car's been perfect across all the events so far. At the RAC track, after about 3 back-to-back 2-lap runs, it stuttered coming down the main straight arounf 4k rpm, and then about 30 seconds later completely lost power.. the engine was still running, but just wouldn't respond. I coasted for 30 seconds or so, then it just started working again. I pulled in, let it sit for half an hour, took it back out and it was perfectly fine for the rest of the day. It was a hot day (about 37 i think), and I've only got the stock temp gauge which is useless, but I don't think it was an overheating issue. Felt like a fuel cut.. either way it hasn't happened since then, so I'm not sure what it was... Any advice would be appreciated.

Here's how the car looks as of today

Image

Image

Anyway, that's about it for now. Cheers :)
