It's not the speed of the gear change that is the key for me but being able to change to the gear I want when I want.
Not 3 seconds later when it's thought about it, got the engine and box ready then made the change.
Dsg etc boxes seem to be the exception to the above.

Re: Paddle heaven
the term slush box is long gone. They were putting ZF autos in Alfas in the 60's and virtually all modern cars have multi geared autos. My impression was that a modern auto is both faster and a lot smoother. Vehicles like the Territory and many others do not even have manuals. I have no experience of the race track apart from being a spectator . I am not even sure if age has much to do with preference but having fun in an MX5 is surely the only reason to have one so if an auto is boring or not engaging it fails. I would like a week or two with one to make an assessment. The larger cars I have already decided- auto thanks.

Wrong.
Try driving an auto landcruiser / prado / hilux / yaris / micra (if you don't die of old age while attempting) / etc
All still slush box. I used to drive a lot of hire cars and still drive alot if 4wds. Slush box is still common.

Re: Paddle heaven
Gave the power shift a real good test today over 300 ks on Kings Hwy to coast and back. In manual most of the time and gave the gearbox a real good workout, swapping cogs fast with minimal effort. Red lining and all that stuff. Very, very impressive drive, even though in torrential rain, blew everything off the road. I'm completely sold on the paddle shift. Beyond any doubt now for me.
