It will have to grow some if its to compete with turbo 86s from 2015.

One thing we should not forget. Making cars is a business. If you don't make cars that people want then they stop making them. MX5s have actually not been competing in the market - the recent sales are a mere blip. I don't think MX5s were competing in the same market as hot hatches - its a sports car and the top goes down and it has a different image.

Wow! Some people seriously dont like a roof!

I think Mazda should do a range, not sure if its economically viable for them to produce multiple variants - a simple soft top with little in creature comforts that is cheap so it appeals to the hard core enthusiast of the original, a retractable hard top with all the fruit to appeal to those that like to pose, and a coupe cos some people just want a cheap, fun, rwd sports car and really should hide their ugly mugs under a roof.

One thing for sure - in Australia pricing of a coupe needs to be sharp to compete with the Toyobaru twins. In the USA and UK the NC is cheaper than the twins where as here the Toyobaru is ridiculously cheap and undercuts the NC by some margin.

We'll have to wait and see if Mazda want to take the mx5 into a performance market, where it will compete with the 86 and hot hatches.
Come again? I dont think the current MX5 is marketed as a commuter or cruiser. It competes with 86s and hot hatches everyday for market share.

Sure it competes somewhat with the 86. I think of the price was closer they'd be close competitors.
But the mx5 doesn't compete with the hot hatches. This is partly represented in the sales figures, but also by the type of person who buys a hot hatch.
Sure, the mx5 is a sportscar, but it lacks the outright speed of the European hatches. With most buyers looking to compete in the traffic light GP over the Philip island GP, the hot hatch is their weapon of choice.
A hot hatch also doubles as a regular DD and is well, a hatch. So I think the mx5 is unique in the market place as an affordable sportscar as opposed to an affordable fast car.

That could be a mx5 fast back but it's well short on sex appeal to be a legitimate FD rx7 successor (as was the rx-8)

Agree with sailaholic.
What ever happened to the new rx7? I remember media articles from early 00 claiming that Mazda was working on a supercharged renesis engine that was to be released around 2013. Guess it was scrapped but c'mon with another model already!!'

At work so can't go digging but I'm sure I saw articles from a couple of months ago where Mazda said the rotary wasn't dead and they were working on an MX-5 based RX-7 successor. No idea of time frames.

Photo isn't sexy enough for a new RX7 but would be great for an MX Coupe (depending on the front)
I'd be tempted as long as it wasn't loaded with unnecessary electronic junk.
That render is already heaps better looking than an 86.
They shouldn't bother with a Rotary unless they can match a RICE engine on fuel consumption.

Awesome cars. The rotary scene is alive and well. Maybe the new model will revive new car sales. Who knows but I'm hopeful for Mazda.

If a rice engine accelerates, has same power band and revs like a rotor, then sure.

No Rotard Zone Please.

Postby oztrackdays » Thu Aug 28, 2014 5:25 pm

I owned a 2002 RX7 and the Rotor is useless it's just the twin Turbz and the wide open fuel taps doing the magic.

One of the P Platers removed the Turbos from her FD RX7 it made 90 rwkw which is about the Same as a bone Stock NC donk.

Rotary is the redheaded orphan of the engine world no one wants to adopt it.

I had a new RX2 and RX4 - the first was a bit awesome and the second definitely not awesome.
I have dríven the early series RX7 and I thought they were great apart from fuel consumption and reliability.
The Series 7 & 8 really fired me up and I'd have bought one instead of the MX5 if the fuel consumption hadn't been so bad.
Rotaries are "fringe" stuff and nobody but the fringe will want them unless they are at least as good as a RICE engine on all parameters.
