Whew! So I'm not going mad then.... seems others are thinking the same thing. That good condition, presentable and totally stock 1st generation models might be worth holding onto, including a selection of parts to keep em running hey!

Before I bought the MX5 I had intended to buy a really good MGB, mainly because they were fun to drive and one of the most attractive looking sports cars ever.
My experience with them told me they were more the "leisurely run in the country & basket lunch" type of proposition however.
On the other hand, all MX5s are genuine driver's cars, and the NA in particular looks good by any standards (and terrific with a HT)
I rarely see a well maintained NA on the streets and most seem to have had body and paint neglected in favour of a big set of wheels.
I would venture to say that a good, well maintained NA (modded or not) will always have high appeal in its market segment, moreso because of it's simplicity.

A nice NA can be a great buy nowadays, as long as you can overlook the lack of ABS, airbags, ESP, TCS, EBD and all the other TLAs.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

So why can we not import a 25 year old car from overseas to restore and register?

The situation is ridiculous.

Doesn't stop ya from picking up a bomb in AU and swapping all the good import parts into it and selling off any left over bits

Mr Morlock wrote:Prices have continued in the direction of down and no one except buyer and seller really knows what gets handed over. As an example there is an NBp2 with 100k on the forum and it's $9k and the car looks pretty good.

This would be my car (now ex-car).

Yes, it was in good condition (about 85% good, few paint blemishes etc), and yes it sold for $9k. There was plenty of interest, and if I had mucked around more, I probably could have gotten more for it.

It's all supply and demand. I agree with the other comments here that as the younger blokes who owned these get older, they will want to get back into them. It remains to be guessed at as to whether they will get into a N(x) latest model, or hunt around for a NA in 20 years time.

Those who drive models across the years may have a preference. Those who drive only one generation, and compare against more vanilla daily drive cars will say that they love their 5, without necessarily considering whether one of the other models may be more enjoyable.

Certainly not in my experience. Provided the car is in decent condition and a fair price, they sell VERY fast. My hunt for an mx5 na8 took about 4 months. During that time, on the first occassion I rung up the seller and discussed to arrange a meeting. After travelling one hour, the car was sold to another bloke. Mind you the car was advertised one/two days ago. Ran into a few other situations like that. Even my mx5 was purchased in a day from when it was advertised and there was interest for it within that timeframe. Definitely more interest in Na's than Nb8a's. I also feel that Nc's are dropping rapidly, and will continue to with the introduction of the ND. Never personally thought the NC was worth it at its original price but certainly worth the price its depreciated to nowadays.

I've had about 7 genuine offers to buy my NA6 and I've only had the thing for a month and it's not for sale. I've never had that before and I've owned a fair crop of cars, including a few which have been "technically better" cars then the MX5 (cost, handling, performance, looks, etc). NA's, at least, are in ridiculous demand.

If I were to get one and keep one stock as a daily I'd get an NB8A.. decent brakes, the good 4 star ANCAP chassis which doesn't need heaps of unstreetable bracing, twin airbags and all round much more refined interior with less resonant vibrations e.g. glovebox lock rattle issues..

However the NB's aren't as nice to drive spiritedly as an NA with some well thought out modifications and have nowhere near the 'classic' appeal the original pop-up headlight chassis brings. Comfort, technology are all great for daily drivers but they disconnect from the driving feel which I what I wanted first and foremost.. I might not be able to outbrake a Bosch race ABS system and I will make more mistakes than a modern ESC but was never the point. Jinba ittai...

People love my car. It's yellow so it's different. White seats and rollbar make it look tougher than it really is. Had many want it, doubt anyone would buy it for what I spent on it... But I love it.
