My interpretation of posted comments. There's aspects that most of us don't like (what design is any different?), but on the whole I think there's been a reasonable acceptance.

Very few people have much negative to say when they see it in person. Suggest reserving final judgement until you're standing next to it or see one on the road.

If gslender wants an empirical result feel free to design a survey with the appropriate questions and responses. We are all giving opinions on a range of likes and dislikes but overall the yeas seem to have it. I don't really see how Mazda could have done much better and one mans ugly boot is another mans stylish tail.

I've surveyed non car people at work. They appear to be instantly for it compared to those of us on here. Lets face it, they're more of them than us. I'm curious to know what percentage of new Mazda car owners are genuine enthusiasts.

I can only talk from experience in one dealership and can tell you it's a tiny percentage as we presently have nothing to offer a real car enthusiast.

And yes the front still looks like an axolotl to me.

Many of the same negative comments regarding the squinty front headlights and overly-large mouth as I have regarding the new design.

This comment was something I bet the designers never thought of and will look odd:

"And where’s the number plate going to sit at the front? Just like the Mazda 3 (which I lovingly refer to as bucktooth), this one’s going to be ruined by a state plate, particularly if it’s a black-on-yellow NSW one."

Can't wait to see it in real life, like the new Mazda 6, I think it will look even better in person than photos which tend to distort dimensions based on the perspective (eg. the rear looks too high in some rear 3/4 photos but from the side it looks fine).

Mazda 3 needs the slimline silver on black plates available in Vic. Looks as if ND will need them too.

the lights are not "squinty" and the "mouth" is not overly large i.e. these things are common with current designs. There are many examples of both -an example is Fiesta, Aston Martin etc. All car co's will cater for number plates and slimlines are readily available.

Styling and design are all about 'proportion'.
Car design/styling "trends" and what other car companies are doing is irrelevant to whether any particular design looks 'right'.
The 'purity' of the Stylist's drawings inevitably get degraded due to a whole range of other practical considerations that have to be taken into account.
There are very few car design that look exactly 'right' when the vehicle eventually hit the road, but those that do become instant classics by popular vote, as most people do seem to have the ability to recognise 'perfection' when they see it.
The headlights of the ND are 'squinty' and 'power-mouth' is too big. The two distinct shapes used in the tail-lights are incompatible.
That said, overall it is a reasonably attractive style and I can see it would appeal to most people.

I like the look and layout of the car but I will reserve final judgement until specifications are released and we get to see how you can buy one...I fear that the base model will be a nice price but will have poo brakes and no LSD but you wont be able to get the big engine, big brakes and LSD without also taking the higher spec / GT stuff that goes with it including the big cost.

I think the question is whether the guys who dislike this ND design were paying close attention to the various artist renditions over the past X years, getting hopes up for a particular design/sketch? I believe this type of behaviour will naturally lead to a tainted opinion of the final product.

What did you guys think it would look like? What is a typical Kodo design, or what is not a Kodo design???

Personally speaking, I try to avoid looking at prototype designs, artist impressions and even punters renditions of what X car will look like in the future, and avoid too much speculation as it can become all too consuming. Why spoil your today by worrying about tomorrow. Only the sniper shots of the camouflaged ND took my attention really. Then I thought it looked like a 370Z :S


Another thing about the 'small' headlights, are you not happy about more body surface area to clean? Want to save on wax?
What were you guys expecting?













If Caffeine could photoshop one of those massive headlights on to the ND for comparisons sake...?
