Me and about 75% of people who have seen pictures of the ND would disagree with one of more of the above.

However the majority of those that have seen it in the flesh either think it's fine or that you should reserve judgement until you actually see it..... That's what I plan on doing.....

Kalt seems to think feelings/response to the final product may have been based on "expectations".
Speaking for myself, I had no 'expectations' about what the result would be, and I certainly don't care whether Mazda sell 100 or 1 million of them.
I hoped for something "inspiring", given that the NA & NB were pretty good designs, and the MX5 is a concept that deserves a great shape.
"Inspiring" to me means that the overall proportions would be ascetically pleasing and the relationship between the various elements would be harmonious.
I hoped that the 'detail' work, headlights, taillights, powermouth, wheels etc would be clean and well proportioned shapes, would fit together well, and would contribute to a coherent totality for the car.
The side profile is good, and not as heavy-looking in the rear as you might be inclined to think from some of the 3/4 views.
The overall shape of the boot and bonnet are also good.
The elements done less well are the head & tail lights and the powermouth - the latter which is very heavy-handed on all the other models as well.

One of the briefs that would have been set for the designers is to design a smaller car which is unmistakeably an MX5. They succeeded. Take a look at Lexus for lamp shapes as a pointer. A large headlamp particularly one with lashings of chrome looks ok perhaps on SUV but less so on a car with a low frontal profile. Lamp ware can be very much a signature on cars and the ND has attracted attention with lamps that are not oversize. What is important with the headlamp is being functional and that remains to be seen.

I certainly do hope that Mazda succeeds with the car because it is a modern classic and much loved- Who really cares about a mazda3 or 6- everyone is doing these things.

Something else that people should understand is that a car still has to be designed for manufacture and repair cost and not just a stylists dream.
