It would be worth mentioning which state you are in, as the situation varies across states.

If he's referencing 25 years I'm assuming Vic.

There are quite a number of things about the Club Permit system and if you are in Victoria the best site to look at is AOMC and Vicroads. The AOMC also publishes a handbook for CPS rules etc.

The key feature is that the scheme is for True Dinks car enthusiasts not just people looking for cheap registration- and bear in mind its not registration its a Permit. The scheme is a privilege for real car enthusiasts and it saves many cars from the car knackery.

If a person is not an enthusiast the system will cracks down on dodgy pop up Clubs etc Many real Clubs and members are not at all happy with the rorting and Vicroads are going to tighten the requirements by the close of this year- at least thats what they have said.

In essence you can use a vehicle that complies with the requirements 45 or 90 days and each use requires a Log book entry. If the Log is not filled out the fine is somewhere around $700- they do pull drivers up for checks,

A person needs to have the support of a genuine Club who in turn supports the scheme and administer it as Vicroads requires.

There are rules on modifications as well i.e. covered by regulations.

Many Clubs charge nothing for processing but virtually all have their requirements for Club compliance e.g. minimum time as a member e.g. 1 year and also an attendance requirement.

Some Clubs esp country clubs cater for a variety of cars not just one makes.

Unfortunately ACT do not have a "Club" registration scheme with the 90 day concept.

Our Assembly apparently drafted legislation in line with Vic and similar states, but it was squashed by the politicians at the final hurdle !!

It does have a Historic registration scheme with very limited usage for club events and "testing", but this will be no use to MX5 owners for years.

ACT does have the ability to register a car for three month periods, meaning you can put it off the road for a period (often winter in Canberra for sports cars) then say register for the summer months, which can save some costs if you do not need to drive the car on-road.
