Tein Super Flex

Hi Gents,

I have an NB8B & am looking at obtaining the Tein super flex coilovers .. i was originally looking at the monoflex's but i feel this may be a little over kill given i had them previously in my weekender s15. the car is currently a daily driver & i think will remain a daily until i end up getting another run around perhaps in a years time. I will be tracking the car in the upcoming year, having dríven the car on the track before it can definitely do with with an upgrade. so my thoughts are having a set up that is both semi-comfortable on the goat track roads of sydney but also provides good performance on the track..

so does anyone have these installed in their NB? if so what are your overall comments or advice around how they feel & perform on the street or track?

I have them on my SE. have been extremely impressed with them so far. Ride is still quite reasonable, but for the amount of track time mine sees they're perfect. I had bilsteen pss9s before and am very impressed by the teins.

Cool..are you able to expand on what you mean by impressed? Out of 1-10 in terms of harshness, how would you rate them for road use (10 being extremely harsh)? I know that this is subjective & varies from person to person, just after the general idea.

In the same way - does the car sit firmly around corners at the track? do you get much body roll as compared to the stock dampers? are they noisy when compressing? did you have any installation problems /modifications that had to be made - i have read that the rear spare tyre needs relocation & an OEM mount needs to be modified (seen at the bottom of the below link)?

i beleive these are the japanese versions not aus spec, so although they are a decent 7kgF & 6kgR they will be firmer, do you have the jap variant?

Juicy will no doubt also comment but my 2 cents worth is;

When in middle setting, more comfortable than standard suspension including way more rebound cotrol (which not everyone will like.
In harder settings for the track you don't care about comfort. Good that you can ajust each side and each cornet depending on the track.
Soft setting is good for if you leave R specs on for the road.
If you were doing a lot of track work I believe you go with higher spring rates.
Spare wheel stays where it normally sits, at least with Tiens.

As far as firmness goes probably about a 6 maybe 7. I found them to be an improvement over the original. You shouldn't have to modify any of the original fitting points or where the spare wheel is. The swap over is quite easy especially using the long bolt method. 2nd what Dave said

thanks for the comments all.. though im still slightly confused as to which way i should go, i have narrowed it down to the street flex's or BC BR's. i did look at the monoflex's but with 10kg front & 8kg rear spring rates on a 1000kg car, i think is too stiff & will bounce at speed on bumpy roads/track.

so again, i need some more advice/comments & feed back from those who have the tein flex or BC's & use their car on the track or mountain runs etc.

factor in the below:
- street flex are twin tube/piston (suited more to street driving), have been told that twin tube heat quicker hence could leak under very bumpy & extreme conditions e.g. track, spring rate as 7kg front 6kg rear, this rate is ideal for the mx i think. having owned teins before they are good quality.

- BC's are 8kg front & 7kg rear, monotube strut which is ideal for track use - however, not sure on the build quality of these, have never owned BC's before & have read some mixed reviews

- car will be primarily used as weekend/track car, so dont mind it being uncomfy AS LONG as it absorbs bumps properly rather than having that really stiff feeling & unnecessary bumpy-ness

- budget is not an issue between the 2

- my thought is to go for the softer teins, i can always set them to a hard setting & purchase sway bars if they are on the softer side for track use - though the twin tube design is giving me the second thoughts

- main goal is to eliminate roll/weight shift as much as possible & have more direct turn in

Hey guys, i just picked up a set of new Monosports from Japan. They are the replacement for Monoflex
I haven't put them on yet, but once I do I will do a review. I am using stock suspension atm but had super streets on my first NA.
Because of the good rate when I purchased them ($1aud = 101 jpy), I got these for under $1500aud landed.
Something to consider... its a great time to take advantage of the rate.

super street spring rates were a bit too soft back then (dont know what they are now) so the springs were changed out to 7kg front/ 5kg rear

interesting.. the current street flex's are 7kg front & 6kg rear.. i dont know if these will be too soft for the NB8B.

if you can go back, would you have purchased a stiffer set of coil overs from day 1 e.g. the mono's

I have just recently installed the TEIN Super Flex on my NA8. The car is used for weekend spirited drives and I just did my first track day at Sandown last Sunday (Woo Hoo). On the road I found the ride firm but comfortable enough. That said I don't use it as a daily driver. On the track it felt very sure footed and I had every confidence in it. I left the spring tension as tuned in the factory and adjusted the ride height down 25mm. As a disclaimer, beforehand the MX5 still had the original (stuffed) factory shocks. I used to own a Subaru Liberty 3R SPEC B (Bilstein suspension). So comparing it to that I am happy.

^ yo no probs I'll give a quick update but to be honest I haven't dríven the car much since I've put it on and it hasn't had an alignment yet (been away).

I can only compare to the std oem showa coilovers though as my car was stock before i put them on.

bodyroll is greatly reduced as expected, but comfort wise you might want to stay away from the monos. even on the softest setting car is bouncing everywhere and you can feel every dip and angle on the road. tires feel firmly planted on the tarmac even on an uneven surface. car feels very serious and i love it.

fully adjustable so you can just unwind the bottom shock body to achieve the desired ride height without touching the spring perch and affecting the load/preload.

sorry that's all i can say for now as I haven't dríven on them too much yet.

I bought them from perfectrun.jp which i've used plenty of times and can recommend them, although the dollar has tanked since i bought these.
