NB top mounts in NA?

Postby pcmx5 » Thu Feb 26, 2015 9:41 am

I had Tein Super Streets that have a Tein top mount.Sold my OE Top mounts in a set with Koni/Eibachs to FFG a long time ago..So no longer have OE top mounts.Bought Tein Street Advance and they do not have top mounts but come with a top spring seat that is designed to fit OE mounts.Instructions say you must use OE or a Tein mount and I have tried the SS Tein mount but am still not happy with the result.

I am trying to buy some NA OE mounts, but there is some reference to people using NB mounts on an NA.Does anyone know what the advantage of this is and is it worthwhile?

The Advance are for both an NA or NB.Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter,

It is my understanding that the NB top hats have a higher spring perch and damper mount. This is will lower the car without any other changes.
There was some aftermarket top hats that allow even more travel in the rear end.

Having had the two types side by side, the shock (damper) mount is higher (also with a completely different bump stop setup)
But the spring perch looks about the same.

I seem to recall that using NB suspension on an NA raises the NA substantially. But I can't remember if that's the top or bottom spring perch that causes it.

Thanks guys. Not sure where I will go ,perhaps get In touch with FM to explore the NB options or just put some NA OE mounts in.

Agree with Juffa and hks_kansei, my NA6 has NB shocks/hats and seems to sit a bit higher than stock (never had stock springs so don't know exactly).
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

nb tophats with na shocks and springs will lower car ~15mm compared to na tophats.
complete nb shock, spring tophat assembly will raise an na.
my son has just changed from na tophats and lowered pedders springs to new standard height king springs and nb tophats and it is still around the same height.i'll see if we can get a picture up over the weekend.(theres plenty of info on this on the big forums)

There was also another thread on this recently where it was discussed. The swap to NB hats using NA shocks is not particularly straightforward and IIRC requires a specially modified nut as there is not enough thread on the top of an NA shock to make it work.

Thanks everyone. The Advances have plenty of thread and will fit with both NA and NB and as they are height adjustable that is also not really an issue. I guess I am now trying to weigh up the advantages of using NB mounts in an NA given the above.

Present thinking is to us the FM NA to NB conversion on the front and the special FM rear mounts. talking to Keith Tanner re this at the moment.

Again thanks to everyone for their input,

Peter.

I was always under the impression that NB mounts were a better design, which allowed more suspension travel compared to the NA mount and isolated NVH better too.

Ended up putting OE NA type top mounts in front and rear with my Street Advances and the result is great, very smooth and controlled ride and great grip/handling.

The instructions said you could use Tein top mounts so I used the old SS ones initially but they restricted travel and the result was terrible .Totally different with the OE types in place.
