Re: "Bright Lights" Number plate recalled
we have fantastic consumer rights in Australia and a Govt dept in particular will stand by the "rights". If anyone is not happy with the replacement they should check it directly with the Dept who is recalling the plates and not jump to conclusions or draw the wrong ones. I don't believe for a millisecond that the public are being gouged and the action being taken is the correct one.

While the cynic in me thinks there may be a little bit of gouging, I agree that there probably isn't a leg for anybody to stand on.
If I read correctly, those with the existing plates are being sent a replacement plate (that meets the standards) free of charge.
I'm pretty sure that in cases like this a business is well within their rights to replace faulty items with a similar (but of course, different in where the fault was) item.
If anybody decided to take it to ACCC or whoever I doubt that they will listen to "but I don't like the newer colour, I preferred the old non-approved version"
I agree that giving the option of a refund (and regular plates) would have been morally right, I wouldn't think there was any legal requirement to do so.

The difference between this and anything else being recalled, is that personalised plates exist purely for vanity. They serve no purpose other than to look how the buyer wants, and the buyer has been duped into buying one design and then being forced to take a different one. If the original sale of the plates were a random draw of designs, it wouldn't matter. As it is though, people paid on the basis that they found a design they were willing to pay for.

Hi All
I went and asked the question, response below... seems like the press jumped on the "do nothing" result (pastel bordered replacements). In practice the reality is completely different...

Well that should put the 'cynics' back in their box. An inconvenience but life is full of them.

It sounds to me like the PR side of this recall wasn't handled as well as it could have been - none the less, looks like there's a way forward.

That is fantastic!
I'm still waiting an email from RMS. If someone else didn't bring this to my attention I wouldn't have a clue anything was happening.
Iv since seen the replacement though. Yuk. I will be going to white on black now I know there's a choice.

I work in an industry that is vilified by the press... I no longer have faith in the media (particularly SMH- tabloid masquerading as a broadshite in a tabloid form factor... ). You can give the press all the PR, facts and truth... but outrage headlines gets the clicks, which brings in the revenue these days...
I figure this is the perfect example of creating outrage during an election to sell inches... (or sell click through)...

Cool, glad I made up for my cranky post.

Don't wait... get the email address in my post, and just say politely that "you have these plates, are not happy with the replacements, seeing as you paid for the format, and will be paying ongoing annual fees you would rather not settle for something you are not happy with, and would like to inquire about changing to another style instead.
You would hate to be "away that week", or they send the email to the one that is on record that you forgot to update three years ago...

Re: "Bright Lights" Number plate recalled
On the site itself, they're offering new colours on black... but the plates seem to be full-size?
Presuming the plates being offered to you guys are slimline and they just aren't selling them yet?!?

Re: "Bright Lights" Number plate recalled
The plates that were offered were full size, a more pastel red and "bordered". I did not like them at all.
I didnt wait for the letter, I emailed and asked for premium white on black instead, these came in the same slimline format as the original bright lights. They had a white border though, so i invested in some number plate covers to knock the border out...
They look orrite, but the original red on blacks looked particularly awesome.
the fronts on the black jowl of the car look pretty good... it is the back ones that aren't the same.

Re: "Bright Lights" Number plate recalled
That's exactly what I went with. Slim line premium white on black.
Didn't wait for the email, I contacted them straight up and got it all sorted.
I've since seen the replacement plates too and they are uuuuugly. they are even bigger than the standard yellow plates (large plates from and rear) and the weirdest pastel colour.
At least black and white will match the rims
