24 Hours of LeMons Australia - Wakefield Park

Postby Tony » Tue Jun 02, 2015 12:27 pm

For those that aren't familiar with the events that have been run in the US for a while now, it's a 24 hour endurance race for cars costing less than A$999 (not including specified safety items). Each team must have 5 or 6 drivers.

The first event in Australia is scheduled for 27th to 29th October 2015 at Wakefield Park, however I believe there are plans to have events in other states.

Details, regulations etc can be found here: http://www.24hoursoflemons.com.au/ and also here: https://www.facebook.com/24hoursoflemons.com.au

Is anyone interested in putting a team together?

I'm interested Tony, but it has to be an MX-5 of course!

Have to be a very rough mx5 to be under $1000. Also interested but may organise something with friends and family.

I really doubt you'd find an MX5 that would fit the criteria and be driveable. I just browsed carsales.com.au for any Mazda under $1,000 and it's not looking promising. I've got a BG Astina that's worth about $4.00 but it needs a motor. Happy to donate it and help fit a motor.

I have a 323 astina hatch with a V6 for $700 locally, however the $880 entry fee per driver rules me out.

I agree with the comments regarding price of the car.

The original concept from the US was for a car to the value of US$500 and that's been roughly rounded up to A$999 for the Australian event. The fact remains that there is probably a much wide variety of clunkers available in the US for $500 than there would be in Aus for $1000.

I wouldn't expect to find an MX5 that's driveable for that sort of money, but there's quite a few manual cars <$1000 on Carsales that could be OK. You'd probably spend between $2000 - $2500 on "safety equipment" before the car was ready to compete (details on web site).

By the time you get the car ready and then include entry fees, fuel, accommodation etc, I reckon with a team of six drivers it could cost at least $1500 each for the first event.

Given the price of the ND, surely there will be NC's popping up for sub-$1000 shortly, right?

I can't see how you could buy a car for under $1000 and have it still running at the end of the event. Most cars under $1000 will have some mechanical problems.
You could buy a car for $1000, but will it last for 24hrs of racing abuse? I think $2500 might be a better budget.

I can't understand the rules. Is it $1,000 or $500?

4.1: Total Investment in Vehicle Can Not Exceed $1000: Except for items described in Rules 4.2 and 4.3, the total spent to purchase and prepare any car may not exceed $500.

then
4.2: Safety Equipment DOES NOT Count Toward $1000 Total:

4.3: Registration, Insurance, and License DO NOT Count Toward $1000 Total

I pretty sure its $1000 but since the regs are just a copy paste of the US ones they may have missed a few when changing them.
