You could buy a car for $1000, but will it last for 24hrs of racing abuse? I think $2500 might be a better budget.

That's part of the fun! Bring your tools, they will break. Plenty of videos and articles out there on the interwebz re these events, they are not intended to be all that competitive. You can't expect the car to go 100% for the whole race either - keep out there and you'll do well.

I am really interested in this but $$ also a problem for me...

The Ghettocet cost just under $1000 to buy. After selling off the coilovers, soft top, rollbar, mags and interior we are actually up $135, and that's AFTER buying a seat, harness and the steel for the cage! Cut springs, NB8A rims so out of whack we had to beat them into shape with a hammer, tyres that weren't good enough for people last season and a face a mother would have trouble loving.

If LeMons comes to WA and any of the "Secret gay ghetto Miata chat" Messenger group (you know who you are) want seat time I think we have a contender, and $985 ( I bought a rear wing) to blow on go fast goodies.

The $1,000 limit does not include wheels & tyres, nor items related to driver safety, like seat, harness, ROP, steering wheel.
Everybody should read the regs, if only because in places they are quite funny :-)

Regs say that any money you get back from selling anything that would not affect the total price to buy, does not offset other costs you've incurred. So selling the wheels and rollbar does not offset the purchase price etc, because wheels and safety gear do not count toward the $1000.

So we have a total budget of $0 but the money we spent on wheels, rollbar, seat and harness is OK. Guess we can't fit the wing though.

I'm in for a drive!... I'm sure we can make a functional splitter and rear wing out of recycled chipboard and gaffa.

Failing that, a mini moke would be a good cheap racer. Nice and light and has good handling... with a cheap rebuild on the engine it would run for another decade or two.

More like a moke would be a great way to ruin your weekend, and a cheap rebuild every few hours it would run for another hour or two.
So lets go!

I've been looking at the US youtubes. There are a lot of pretty solid cars in that: old volvos, Chevs, utes, vans, etc. I'm guessing they could put 30-40 teams onto the track at Wakefield, which means 150-250 drivers, about half of them with limited track experience. The cost factor could put a lot of old Falcodores out on the track. I considered going speedway as a local pastime a little while back. I could get a dirt track prepped fully barred out Commodore for only $1,800. Deduct $1,500 for the cage and seat and that sort of thing becomes a pretty sensible choice for a lot of teams. They'd be pretty feral on the track.

While I love the look of the ghettocet it's a motorkhana machine, not a door basher. Maybe even a standard MX5 is a bit light for comfort.

Would need to make an exhaust for it, has to exit behind the driver and meet the noise limits.
Plus no external cages.

If you turned up at the track in that thing, do you really think they would want to argue with you?!!!

But it would be fun to drive in that, complete with a dummy dressed like a tin-pot dictator in the back :-)
