You could buy a car for $1000, but will it last for 24hrs of racing abuse? I think $2500 might be a better budget.
That's part of the fun! Bring your tools, they will break. Plenty of videos and articles out there on the interwebz re these events, they are not intended to be all that competitive. You can't expect the car to go 100% for the whole race either - keep out there and you'll do well.
