Perfect! Needs more photos haha.

Reckon you could fit a 10mm spacer to make it more flush?

Fat! Any rubbing with the 225/45 under hard braking or turning? How low are you from the ground? Cant really tell from the photos.

Needed guards rolled, liners modified, offset bushes and a bit of a lift.

Did you mean 225/50/15? I didn't think you could get the AO50 in 225/45/15.

Any rubbing or clearance issues with that set up or is it a straight bolt in on the SE?

I'd like to try some meaty tyres/wheels at some point, but I'm not sure if they'd make me faster. The only mx5 I've dríven with 225's was Terry's v8, and any impact of wider tyres was lost in the broader experience....

I might always pine after that machine...

From what I understand going from 15x8 to 15x9 on a 225 will make more of a difference in lap time than going from a 205 to a 225 on the same size (eg 15x8) rim.

The problem in Australia is tyre selection in the 225/45/15 size. I am looking at either 15x8s or 15x9s but can't decide whether the increase in performance of the 9 is worth it given the lack of tyres in 225/45/15.

15x8 with a 205 is technically illegal given all the manufacturers (I've seen) recommend a 7.5" max width for a 205/50/15 but it doesn't look odd.

If you get stuck for tire choice and have to run 205/50/15 on a 9" you might start drawing attention.

Other option is to go 225/50/15 and change your diff ratio to make up for the rolling diameter change.
