[Qld] Car trailer – Wanted to hire tomorrow
Hi all,
I am going to look at an unregistered MX-5 tomorrow afternoon; if it checks out there is a good chance I will buy it. I want to arrive there with a trailer and cash so that I am in the best bargaining position.
Car is in the North of Brisbane, I am near Ipswich. Is anyone prepared to hire me a suitable trailer for the day tomorrow? Any location on the round trip would be suitable, but the closer to my end the better.
I could of course hire one from a servo, but I would rather give the money to a board member instead (or a bottle/carton if you prefer).

If you're looking at the Maroon NB, it is very rough, and it's worth much less than the asking price. $3k max!

Hoolio I'm in Purga and can lend you a trailer.
This is the trailer. 7 Pin rectangular plug, with electric trailer brakes, breakaway, regoed and insured. Tyre rack slips on/off.
Trailer tilts up and it has a manual winch if you really need to pull a car on (very slow)... Loads a car with about 70mm ground clearance with no problems.

Have you had a look at it? Is it rough mechanically or cosmetically (or both)? I know about the hail damage but I don't know how bad that is, the photos in the ad are poor.
If it is mechanically sound it might suit my purpose as the starting point for a track hack, but there is still a minimum cosmetic standard to attain.

Yes, I had a look at it on Sunday, with a similar idea in mind.
The hail is not minor. The paint down the drivers side is bubbling with evidence of very poor respray. The front bar is ratty. There's rattle can paint on the passenger door covering something up. The soft top is shot.
It starts and runs, drives. Needs bushings to the shifter. The interior is a bit ratty - passenger door card is torn with tape on it.
The oil is clean, and the brake fluid looks new, as do the rotors. Someone has painted the calipers red.
The under tray is missing, and there's oil drops on the front of the sump (leaking seals - half on, crank/cam/sump).
Given what you can buy for $6k this looks very expensive.
The owner is not the guy who has it. Told me his brother bought it at auction for his niece who did not want it. Has been advertised on the side of the road for $7k. Was apparently on the wovr, but removed and passed RWC (must have had a good clean for the oil leak to pass).
I offered 3k. He didn't think his brother would sell under 5.

The American are you thinking of another MX5...
Notwithstanding trailer/straps arranged, hell Tess even offered to tow the trailer with the Amarok...

Based on Americans comments it screams really poor car. Maybe consider that buyng it without proof of ownership is not smart.

If I came across an Nb8b/c cheap enough as a base! The cosmetics and the oil leaks on this one don't bother me given what I have in mind, but the price has to reflect it. If the soft top, interior etc were good enough to sell on, the deal would be more interesting. Because absolutely everything is tatty, there's not much room to recover some of the price selling off bits.
To the OP, drive a hard bargain! I hope my conversation with him helps your negotiations! I can't see him having paid that much for it at auction.
On the up side, the low kms look genuine to me (have a look around for the last service sticker you can see)

Re: [Qld] Car trailer – Wanted to hire tomorrow
The American: Thanks for your reply. It sounds as though you looked at it with the same intent as me. I figured that if the basic mechanicals are okay it would be a good starting point for me, and there would be some cost recovery from things I don't want like the soft top. However, as you say it is starting to sound rather expensive given that it is so ratty. I'm not sure what to do now so I am chewing it over - mobilising the cash and a trailer and making the round trip to have a look at it is going to cost me most of the day.
The seller I spoke to said that he had bought it for his daughter, unreg but with RWC, but they never registered it as she didn't like it. I would therefore be very careful to get proof of ownership, but can I trust a hand written receipt if he bought it privately? A PPSR check ought to verify that it is off the WOVR (I have got the VIN).
Hmmm…

I would do the REVs check regardless if serious about purchasing. However maybe best to discuss price and if you can't get the person to move then save the effort. Or give the seller your price offer cash and to come over with a trailer to pay and collect.

That's good advice

Spoke to the seller, says he has had offers but $4800 is the lowest he will go. I won't go there today and we'll see how it plays out…

Good plan. If he contacts you on Saturday I'm happy to go for a drive on Sunday to help you pick it up, could also stop in for coffee with Roger on the way.
