Re: NA or NB...
Sounds like you both really need to inspect & drive both of them to see which one you both like best.
NVH is also a consideration with NAs - probably won't worry you as a bike rider, but your wife might not appreciate it.

Re: NA or NB...
I agree with sailholic. The NBP2 or later is a better car than an NA including the NA8- based on safety and updates that were done to the model. The 6 speed on an NBP1 makes for good cruising and you have a modern airbag set up. The NC is even more comfortable and modern but more expensive. Its rubbish to say that NC is not good and retractable hard tops are readily available. I would not consider an NA at all for daily or regular use but in Vic it qualifies for Club Plates- not in other States yet. .

I've only ever dríven an NA so am not in a position to offer a comparative view, but having averaged 11,500 km / yr (mainly suburban / city driving) over nearly 25 years in the same daily-drive NA, my experience is that it is a fantastic car... functional, economical, classically stylish and it brought a smile to my face every time I got behind the wheel. Lost it in an accident in the middle of last year. Bought another NA in December. Good luck with your decision, though I daresay you can't really lose.

Re: NA or NB...
As far as driving around town etc, there is very little difference between an NA and an NB.
Even when driving hard, there isn't that much difference between them.
I have an NB8A, and my GF has an NA6.
The NA6 is far better for the home mechanic, everything is just that little bit simpler. The NB has some more odd electrical bits that make things awkward occationally.
The NB however is the nicer car to drive, more secure on the road, more power (although still not enough imo) better stereo, aircon, etc.
Option wise, i'm sure you've read the basics of what each one comes with, airbags, aircon, ABS etc. It's up to you if any of these are important.
At the end of the day, buy based on the condition of the car. If I had to replace my car i'd happily take a well looked after NA over a slightly rough NB for the same price.

Re: NA or NB...
I am going to get so flamed...
...but I can't understand why any of you would want to own an MX5 as a road car...especially an NA! They are cramped, uncomfortable, hot, wobbly of chassis, impractical, won't carry much, you can't see out of them, they kill you if you flip them, they leak water (especially with the roof down), speaking of which, most of them have a stupid soft roof, and mine doesn't even have power mirrors (and I can't reach the passenger side mirror to adjust it from the driver's seat)! Catch breath. There is nothing special about the engines, the gearboxes are over-rated for shift feel, the NA 1.6 diffs are prone to wear and aren't terribly strong. OK, calm down now.
But they do look OK. And mine *is* the best handling road registered car I have ever dríven. And it won me two NSW state championships and one Australian Championship. But other than that....
So, get an NB.

Re: NA or NB...
The only reason you might get an NA6 over an NA8 is because you are going to mod the hell out of it. And you are going to replace the weak bits to stronger bits than the NA8upgrades
That's not suggesting an NA6 isn't a pleasure to own or drive. But if you are just going to leave it pretty much stock with the usual bolt on modifications the NA8 is the better base.

Thankyou to everyone who took the time to reply to my post.
you have all been a great help, and have now narrowed my selection down to a NA8 or NB8B.. just need to take em for a spin and see what I like... though I have a feeling the NB might win... still do prefer the cool look of the NA
cheers
