When I used to work in claims we allowed choice of repairer, but I always recommended our own guys. They gave our members higher priority and we as the insurer guaranteed the workmanship for life.
Yes it worked out cheaper for us, but from my own personal experience the quality of work was excellent. We pumped hundreds of cars into these shops. They cared more about maintaining our relationship than some guy off the street that comes in once or twice in his lifetime.

+ cheaper cost for insurer means premiums don't balloon more than usual

An insurers preferred repairer is not always a bad thing.

Or NRMA Qld's definition of choice of repairer....

"We will let you use your choice of repairer, but only pay the amount our repairer quoted and you will pay the difference" and that was for a not at fault collision.

Defeats the purpose of choice of repairer really.

And the repair job wasn't the best, but the repairer location was not convenient for me to take it back to complain, and neither was the NRMA claims centre. Most would have lived with it, but it annoyed me that the door frame didn't fit quite right.....

Needless to say I am no longer with NRMA......

Can also mean from the insurer's list, not too unlike kazama's example.

I have had my motorcycle insured with Famous. Last year, a learner P plate decided to do a last minute right angle turn across the highway I was travelling and knock me off the bike. He claimed he thought he had time to complete a u turn.

My bike was 4 weeks old. I had some minor scratches and scrapes. The bike went down softly as I had just clipped the rear bumper. It suffered a broken gear leaver with some very minor scratches. One minor scratch was on the swing arm.

The insurance company (Famous) offered me to take the bike wherever I wanted. Once it had been quoted by my choice of repairer, they then sent an assessor. The assessor called me directly to discuss. He was going to write off the bike due to the cost involved in replace,ENT to swing arm, tank, plastics etc to get the bike back to 100%. He even said that although the frame and forks do not appear damaged, it's better to be safe than sorry.

I was paid out quickly from the insurance company for the agreed $28,000. I was offered a new bike or pay out.

Two weeks later I was offered to buy back the damaged bike. I paid $1,750!!! It could not be insured or registered again as it was a stat write off. So I advertised the bike as a track bike for sale and sold it on line within hours of posting. I made a handy profit!

I endorse Famous from my experience on a bike. However, I have just gone through Budget direct for the new MX5 NC. The main reason is that from 9-5 I work Monday-Friday. I really have found it hard to contact Famous during these times and required insurance. Even on line I fill out their form and they say they will be in touch on next business day which they have not. They are not very accessible for new insurance outside their own times. So, they have missed out on this year however have my new Ducati motorbike still insured with them.
