Getting a bargain or getting value for money are different things to different people. Yes I know it's marketing fluff. But that's how it is. While I would agree that if you get the car just for parts it's not worth while for most of us.

But we don't know what the motivation is for whoever paid the money for this car. Good chance both bidders had similar motivation.

I paid too much for my car almost 20 years ago. But the amount of joy & distraction from sh*t things in my life I got from patchy has been priceless .

The controls on re - registering a car that has been written off are very rigorous these days. Very few are rebirthed now days.

Controls are very tight on insured cars but when a car isn't insured and damage has accorded or the insurance company refuses to except the claim such as driver was DUI or a car has heavy panel damage/rust / under water with no insurance it makes it very financially possibility for a re birthing.

It happening in many Western Sydney's back yards right now

This particular car is Statutory Write off, can never be re registered..Can only be used for parts..The point is $5,500 is more than the parts are worth plus you have to pull it apart and get rid of the body and broken parts..The person who bought this wreck will work that out once they get it home..

What if he owned another MX5SE that was badly damaged uninsured and still registered $5500 and a bit of work could get him back on the road

Depending on the damage seems like a good upgrade for an old NA or an exocet. Did it have an after-market ECU or any other mods? Had the airbags gone off?

If someone was parting out you might think it's a lot of work for not enough profit but if someone was already looking to buy most of those bits they've still probably saved some dollars.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

$5500 seems a lot for a bootlid and 1 door, that's about the only body panels not not destroyed..

As mentioned on page 1 it's possibly someone who wants a turbo MX5, probably in Vic since we seem to have the most strict mod rules and the most costly/difficult engineering.

Vicroads do however allow a car to be converted to an upgraded factory model WITHOUT an engineers certificate, provided you use all the parts that that model came with.

So in the case of converting an NB8B to a turbo, you could put in an SE engine, gearbox, bracing, brakes, etc and have it legal, and turbo, without the need for engineering.

vs say turboing the 8B as is, and having to spend lots of money and jump throuhg lots of hoops to have it be given a engineers certificate (which btw, doesnt stop you from getting a defect, it simply means you can have it cleared more easily)
