Thinking of getting an NA mx5
Hey guys im new to the forum. I currently own a 1999 honda s2000. The plan was to turbo it just before i got off my p plates but after being told how much it would cost, i no longer want to take that path. So my question is, how much does it cost roughly to turbocharge an na and would it perform better than an s2k? Id want to work the engine a bit too. I can do most of the labour myself so id be only worried about parts cost. Thanks for any input you guys might have

Re: Thinking of getting an NA mx5
Does it have to be legal road registered (including emissions)?
How much is the NA (NA6 or NA8) you are looking at?
Is it for daily drive, track, hard parking, stance, dyno comps or SPR (Stance Potato Racing)?
What is your budget?

It would be street registered. And about a budget of 20k that includes buying the car

Considering the price of a low kilometre NB8B now, that'll leave you a fair bit of wiggle room for fun stuff.

Re: Thinking of getting an NA mx5
The question here is what do you want out of the car. You want to go faster, but is that on the track or drags?
If it's at the track, then I'd suggest you stick with the S2K for now and learn to drive it fast. A stock-ish S2K is capable similar times to a turbo charged MX5 (T25 or T28 with a stock engine), so save yourself the changeover cost and stick with the S2K.
However, if you want to go faster cheaper, then it's a slightly different story and there are many examples here - just do a search.
That said, whatever you may be trying with an MX5 vs S2K, you will be coming from behind with the MX5. In other words, if you plan on building an MX5 to beat an S2K, you'll be playing catchup.
The MX5 is not about outright speed. It's about a fun, engaging drive. So think carefully.

Re: Thinking of getting an NA mx5
Mainly i was wanting more speed but didnt want to loose the lack of roof and handling on an s2k. Plus I like the look of the na over an s2k. Its main purpose id use it for would be mountain runs and weekend drives to the coast, that sort of thing.
Just trying to explore some options before I go ahead and sell up.

You'd be giving quite a few modern luxuries as well going to an NA.

The NA doesn't have a light to tell you that a door is ajar, let alone things like central locking.
That's the level we're talking about.

Re: Thinking of getting an NA mx5
None of us are trying to be negative (obviously, we love NA's), but the S2k was a Boxter rival, so has a vastly different personality.
Definitely drive one, there's a lot to love
