Yeah, I thought that too. Is heatshrink fuel proof? I would be sceptical to say the least.
But then again, I was surprised when I learned that electric fuel pumps are actually inside the tank. Then I figured some smart ass engineer figured it is ok. Coming from an electrical background I was surprised. Just didn't sound right to me. Having now accepted that this is how it is I'm quite happy that cars don't go KA_BOOM all the time.
