How bad are these cracks?

Postby ninerwfo » Thu May 18, 2017 9:41 am

... on my front discs. Can I still go to the track tomorrow, or will I sniff out my life force in a blaze of glory at the end of T1?Image

Look like surface cracks only in the brake pad material layer. Can you feel them with your finger nail?

Hi-ho Magpie! Definitely not - rotors are smooth, could not even get a razor blade to catch. Does this mean things are looking up?

Yep, surface cracks in the pad material deposited on the rotors. Only way to confirm cracks would be to have them machined.

Just out of curiosity, carbotech pads???
Mine look like that all the time.

No, just plain ol' Bendix street pads. I have since also read that those cracks can appear when you use street pads at the track. They heat up, you push harder, and more clamping force than is needed is put on the discs? Looks like I'll run the gauntlet. :)

If the cracks start to propagate close to the outer edge of the rotor, lose them. But if they stay inboard by a good half inch or more they should be fine, in my experience.
